Book Description

August 1999 Thorndike Inspirational
The year was 1753, and the lines of separation were firmly drawn. The French had named the region Acadia, their "beloved home, " but the British came prepared to do battle for the new continent. The settlers were either French or English, and though their villages were but a stone's throw apart, most could go an entire lifetime without speaking to someone from the other side. But a chance encounter begins a friendship that will propel two young women on a journey from which they can never turn back...

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In 1753, the French and British settlers of Acadia are divided by threats of war. Realizing that fighting will surely break out if the British government demands oaths of loyalty from the French settlers, Catherine Price hopes for the best and continues to plan her wedding to Lieutenant Andrew Harrow. Louise Belleveau is also planning to marry, and the two women meet accidentally while picking wildflowers for their wedding bouquets. They quickly form a bond, only to have their friendship threatened by the growing tension between their two societies. Oke and Bunn's (The Matchmakers, LJ 11/1/97) huge readership should find much to enjoy in this smoothly written romantic adventure, though others may be put off by the overstated messages about peace, love, and the importance of God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected., March 24, 2000
I have been a collector of Janette Oke's books since her first books were published. I haven't read any of her co-authored books until this one. I loved her other books so well I was afraid the co-authored books wouldn't be as good. I was wrong! I loved this book and like the other reviewers, can't wait to get my hands on the sequel. I am ready to go out and buy her other co-authored books to add to my collection now. I would recommend any of Janette Oke's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars I agree, it's their best so far!, November 19, 1999

I loved the storyline, but I also was really drawn into the characters, and almost felt as if they were friends of mine. I identified deeply with the two ladies, and I felt their conflicts. I've read all of Janette Oke's books, and all of their combined efforts, and this one touched my heart the most.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please, tell me there's a sequel!, March 21, 2000

I have read many Janette Oke books, but this was, by far, the best. It means nothing to me about historical accuracy, but another reviewer was absolutely right when she said that it's a story about how racism and hatred can hurt innocent people. But God's love was shown beautifully through 2 women of different cultures. This book had more quality storyline than any previous books by the same author. The only down side was the book ended and I was left crying my eyes out! I would certainly hope that Janette Oke & T Davis Bunn will write a sequel!
