Justin-Julius Santos: Encounters,
By Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Meeting Strangers (Hardcover)
Justin-Julius Santos is a young photographer who is still in the process of defining himself as an artist. His work in fashion is very highly regarded as are his images of still life and landscapes. With this volume he concentrates on the 'model' - the male both fully clothed and partially protected by position and lighting. What makes this collection interesting is not the group of models he has elected to photograph; these are not the magnificent specimens of virility that populate most books of this category.
What makes Santos' work interesting is the candor of the imagery. These models are seemingly caught unaware, they seem to make spontaneous eye contact with the camera and yet do not 'pose'. Because of this spontaneity the men seem all the more intriguing to the viewer: there is considerable unspoken conversation between the model and the viewer. Santos knows what he is doing and accomplishes his mission to be assured of the results he attains without the fol-de-rol of pseudo-preparation. There is room to grow here as the artist becomes more comfortable with the nude male. But this collection is a first and of great interest. Grady Harp, February 11 |
