5.0 out of 5 stars Winner Best Film Score, Oxford Film Festival 1978, REISSUED, June 6, 1999

This review is from: Meetings With Remarkable Men (Audio CD)
This is the inspired and only orchestration available of the Gurdjieff / de Hartmann music, which was dictated by G. I. Gurdjieff and harmonized for piano by Russian composer Thomas de Hartmann between 1925 and 1927. All other recordings are of de Hartmann's piano arrangements.

Directed by Peter Brook and Jean de Salzmann, the film follows the story-line of Gurdjieff's quasi-autobiographical book MEETINGS WITH REMARKABLE MEN. Composer, pianist and conductor Laurence Rosenthal, whose work includes musical scores for numerous films and major television productions, including THE MIRACLE WORKER, BECKETT and PETER THE GREAT, has drawn knowledgeaably on the original Gurdjieff / de Hartmann collaborations and sensitively alternated these with his own compositions and with authentic Middle Eastern folk performances. His soundtrack won the award for Best Film Score at the Oxford Film Festival when it was issued in 1978/1979.
