Amazon.com Review

Mega Man: Battle Network is not the side-scrolling game that fans have grown up with, but rather an isometric, role-playing adventure game. For those cringing at this evolution, don't despair--with an amazing real-time battle system, this game should appease even die-hard platform-shooter fans.

In the near future, the Net is connected to virtually everything--from computers to office water coolers. An evil group is bent on dominating the world by corrupting the Net with viruses. You play as Lan, a young hacker, who must stop this threat with the help of his virus-busting program (and best friend) Mega Man.exe.

Lan can walk up to just about any object and either use it or get some interesting (and often funny) information about it. In fact, this kind of exploration is necessary, because there are Net jacks in the strangest places--even a doghouse. And while Mega Man.exe is deployed fighting viruses on the Net, you often have to go out and collect clues in the real world. This teamwork adds some refreshing complexity to the game.

Fans of Pokémon will like the battle chip system. Finding chips and upgrading Mega Man.exe is the name of the game, enabling the program to unleash more powerful attacks. Battle chips can be sold, traded, and combined into rarer, more powerful chips. In addition, you can link up with a friend and trade chips, or battle for them.

The game's best element, however, is its battle system. Battles occur in real time, with fast arcade action. Mega Man.exe can lob bombs, shoot his hallmark cannon, summon other virus-busting programs to his aid, and more--depending on which of the 175 battle chips you find and deploy in battle.

Mega Man: Battle Network is a solid performer, but its story is geared to a younger crowd. Still, there's plenty here to satisfy fans of the series. --Bryan Karsh

Pros:

  • Amazing real-time battle system
  • Trade chips via link cable, or fight for them against a friend's copy of the game
  • Interactive world in which almost every object has a purpose
Cons:
  • Story line might be too childish for older players

5.0 out of 5 stars The coolest mega man game EVER!, September 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Mega Man Battle Network (Video Game)
This game is the end of sidescrolling and the beginning of action/RPG for Mega Man. You play as Lan and his PET, or Navi, Mega Man. Lan lives in the Real World, while Mega Man lives in the Cyber World. TO play as Mega Man, Lan must jack into something (PCs,ovens, etc.). Lan and Mega Man must help to save AC/DC town from evil. My reccomendation: BUY IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strangely enough, very good!, February 1, 2002
This review is from: Mega Man Battle Network (Video Game)
In my opinion, there aren't many games for the GBA that deserve a 5 star rating at the moment, but this title is one of the exceptions. I won't take my time to write a short summary of the game's storyline, since the site's review asically has it in a nutshell, but I really would like to focus on what makes this game so great. First of all, while this game is an RPG, it features a very unique action-oriented battle system that is not at all hard to get used to thanks to a mini-tutorial included in the game. In other words, if you're slightly sick of the usual RPG battles, this title might provide a somewhat refreshing change. Even better is the fact that when you defeat your enemies you will sometimes be able to get chips that will allow you to learn their moves, which first of all adds a collect-them-all replay value element to the game and second of all for once makes you actually look forward to the game's many random battles. The game itself is bright and colourful and really has as much personality as any other game I've encountered on the system. The translation is also wonderful, with characters talking like normal human beings instead of using the usual RPG cliche-speak. I also found out from personal experience that you do not at all need to be a Mega Man fan in order to get into this game, which can only be a good thing. Bottom line: if you already own Golden Sun and Advance Wars and aren't sure which title to pick up next, this could very well be the game you're looking for. Highly recommended.

This un doubtedly one of the top ten best Game Boy Advance games ever! It has nonstop action and killer thrills, but let me say this, "Who needs a plot." This a game you can enjoy nonstop, even at a slow point, there are always battles to be won. This is a top on any list of quality games, in short, it's really great.
