Our son received a John Deer dump truck with a few Megablocks as a starter kit and he was having so much fun learning to build, we decided to order some more. While the blocks are durable and he's enjoying the additional pieces, there are far too many of the smallest blocks.

Here's what my kit contained:
Bear in mind, there are two different height blocks; for this review, I will call them "regular" and "1/3 height" (meaning you'll need to stack 3 together to be the same size as a "regular" block.

1x1 block, regular height: 59
1x2 block, regular height: 12
1x2 block, 1/3 height: 53
1x3 block, regular height: 6
1x4 block, regular height: 3
1x4 block, 1/3 height: 10
2x2 block, regular height: 2
2x2 block, 1/3 height: 10
2x2 slope front, reg. ht: 6

As you can see, there is a variety of blocks (and colors), but in order to build something really big/strong/tall, more of the 2x2 and 1x4 blocks would be essential.

Our son is only 16 months and certainly not at that stage yet, but if these blocks are labeled for up to 5 years old, I can see the potential for frustration as he gets older and wants to build more complex structures.

My wife thought I was a little crazy for tallying up all the different blocks for this review, but when I expressed my annoyance at the lack of bigger blocks, she agreed and said she wished there was a "foundations" kit of Megablocks that included many more of the bigger/longer/taller blocks.

I was debating between purchasing the 80 or 160 quantity Mega Bloks for my 1 year old and a 2 year old boys. I'm glad I purchased the 160 block bag. With 160 blocks, multiple kids can play and build while minimizing the chance they will run out blocks although they do run out of foundation blocks.

PROS:
1. Both my boys love playing with the blocks.
2. The size of the blocks is perfect. They are large enough you don't have to worry about a baby swallowing or choking on them and not too large or small that they become awkward for a 1 year old or toddler to handle and maneuver.
3. The blocks are durable.
4. The zip up bag the blocks come in makes clean up, transport, and storage easy.

Cons:
1. There is a disproportionate mix of blocks. Many, many more smaller blocks than larger foundation blocks which no doubt is done to boost quantity but reduce material used. I did receive a slightly different mix than another reviewer stated so I will include my count also. To start with, I actually received 170 blocks instead of 160. I counted multiple times so I guarantee my total count of 170 is accurate. I also want to clarify that the thinner blocks are 1/2 height instead of 1/3 height as stated by another reviewer.

1x1 full height : 69
1x2 1/2 height : 51
1x2 full height : 12
1x3 full height : 6
1x4 1/2 height : 11
1x4 full height : 3
2x2 1/2 height : 10
2x2 full height : 2
2x2 slope : 6

2. The 1x1 full height blocks don't fasten as securely as the other blocks. If you put a 1x1 on a larger block and turn the larger block upside down some of the 1x1 blocks will fall off.

Summary:
The most important thing is both my boys love playing and building with the blocks.

My daughter loves these blocks and so do I. This set - part of the "First Builders" line - contains large blocks that do not pose any choking hazard. The bloks are vibrant colors and interlock very well for sturdy building. Also, this set is a good value - lots of blocks for the money and you'll want a lot to make larger structures. The one thing I'd point out is that Mega Bloks do come in different sizes and they are not all compatible with each other. Knowing how much my daughter loves these blocks, Grandma got a Dora-themed set of Mega Bloks for my daughter, thinking that they could be used in conjunction with this set. They cannot as they are smaller and not from the "First Builders" line. So, just make sure you're getting the right size.

My 3 years old son is a little 'Bob the builder' he loves building houses, towers and castles. This set is exactly what he needs for all construction projects. We bought two sets and 160 pieces for $23.99 (as of march 2014) is a real bargain. Lego duplos cost at least 3-4 times. These blocks are very good to easily construct decent size buildings and they are easier to attach and detach compared to lego duplos and other similar items. However, after being abusively played for several months, some pieces may get loose and develop a tendency to fall apart easily. Additionally, although these are good for building constructions, projects that require more details may be made better with legos which allow more combinations. Yet, in my opinion it still deserves a 5 star for what it offers at this very bargain price and the zipper bag that comes with it is a bonus too...

I wish I could give these blocks more than 5 stars. My grandchildren and I have loved building with them since they were babies. They are now 5 and 7 years old and our buildings have gotten much bigger and more complex. I keep buying more bags so that our buildings take up the whole room. We build mountains for their race tracks to go over. I think the 7 year old will be an architect or builder because of the fun we have had. Buy many bags!! I think they have 7 now.
