Editorial Review

Sure, the working catapult is great, and the dragon that can be made to flap its wings is even better, but it’s the little things that really make this set come to life; like the gothic ornamentation on the heavy fortress doors, the weather-worn rocks, and the hollow stumps. The flexibility the pieces allow is also a big plus: the earth and architectural elements can be combined in almost any configuration imaginable. The knight figures are surprisingly ferocious looking, and are ingeniously designed to stand freely, snap in place on the ground, or mount horses and dragons. The weaponry and armor is simply fantastic, and a lot of it is removable. There is one flaw though;some of the pieces don’t snap together as securely as they should, especially various dragon parts that are prone to fall off. Requires 2 AAA batteries (for dragon effects).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great set!, August 10, 2002
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mega Bloks Dragons Sorcerers Lair (Toy)
Some thoughts on this set:

--the dragon is very cool.
--I like that the batteries can be replaced in the "power stones", other sets from other manufacturers sometimes don't account for battery replacement.
--Gave it 4 stars for durability only because I wonder about the durability of the motor and gears that lift the "scepter chamber" out of the monolith (the kids screamed "COOL!" the first time they fired it up).
--The knights are also great looking, but the joints in the figures legs seemed a bit loose, certainly looser than the joint on figures from other manufacturers.
--The magnet in the dragon claw is very weak.
--The dragon, the figures, and the castle walls are painted or colored to make them look more "real"... not just a single, solid color throughout. It seems to be very colorfast --I've not noticed that it is chipable or wearing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lego's it ain't, November 22, 2002

My son does love this toy, but it takes forever to get together and it falls apart very easily. It's a parent's nightmare! I feel like taking some rubber cement to it. Fun for the kids "if" you can get it to stay together. Why can't they make a toy like this with the Lego quality?????

4.0 out of 5 stars Great toy after you're done building, November 22, 2002

Building this set was sometimes hard and frustrating. The directions are ok but dont give close-up detail. That said, after you're done building, this set has many possibilities of placement of the highly-detailed soldiers and special pieces (gargoyles, tree, fire, etc.). Unlike Legos, the land boards are 3D and look like cliffs and are painted in more than one color - very cool. This set also includes a grey-black dragon and a working catapult. On the box it says ages 8 and up but I would recommend it for 12 and up. Overall, this set is very fun after you've built it.
