Chances are, if you're looking at this, you already have some other sets from the MagneXt line (and I'd highly recommend picking up the 115 piece standard set first).

As a general comparison between Magnetix and MagneXt... the latter are somewhat less versatile (you can only build shapes on 45 degree angles), but it's easier to build a sturdy structure.

As for the special pieces, some are better than others, and some are simply confusing. This kit doesn't come with any example builds and the descriptions of the pieces are sometimes worthless (what exactly is the round piece that they call a build base for? You can't really build anything on it...)

Regardless, the wheels are good for making vehicles (though this set only has two). There are some caster-like pieces that you can use for making things roll as well. The hinges are useful, as are the chains and springs. This set also comes with some simple straight connectors, but unfortunately these have balls fused to the ends instead of just magnetic ends, which decreases their usefulness.

So, if you like these sets and want to build some more unusual stuff, I'd say this set is definitely worth it (particularly at Amazon's price).

This is the third Magnext set I have purchased for my 4- and 5-year old daughters (and myself!). This set is NOT a starter set; it is essentially useless without another set of basic parts. The main problem with this set is it has no instructions. I have no idea what some of these "special parts" do. Even after significant experimentation, I couldn't figure a couple of them out. Nevertheless, it does add some nice options, and gives my daughters some extra things to experiment with. Well worth getting once you have another set or two in the house.

I bought this set as an addition to other sets that I have bought for my grandchildren. Magnext are a lot of fun for children to play with. The small silver balls are not for children that put toys in their mouths, but my grandchildren 4 and 6 enjoy playing with them. They enable them to use their imagination to make many different things. I still watch them closely to be sure they do not put them near their mouths. The only complaint that I have is that there are very few construction examples included with the set.
