Chances are, if you're looking at this, you already have some other sets from the MagneXt line (and I'd highly recommend picking up the 115 piece standard set first).

As a general comparison between Magnetix and MagneXt... the latter are somewhat less versatile (you can only build shapes on 45 degree angles), but it's easier to build a sturdy structure.

As for the special pieces, some are better than others, and some are simply confusing. This kit doesn't come with any example builds and the descriptions of the pieces are sometimes worthless (what exactly is the round piece that they call a build base for? You can't really build anything on it...)

Regardless, the wheels are good for making vehicles (though this set only has two). There are some caster-like pieces that you can use for making things roll as well. The hinges are useful, as are the chains and springs. This set also comes with some simple straight connectors, but unfortunately these have balls fused to the ends instead of just magnetic ends, which decreases their usefulness.

So, if you like these sets and want to build some more unusual stuff, I'd say this set is definitely worth it (particularly at Amazon's price).

This is the third Magnext set I have purchased for my 4- and 5-year old daughters (and myself!). This set is NOT a starter set; it is essentially useless without another set of basic parts. The main problem with this set is it has no instructions. I have no idea what some of these "special parts" do. Even after significant experimentation, I couldn't figure a couple of them out. Nevertheless, it does add some nice options, and gives my daughters some extra things to experiment with. Well worth getting once you have another set or two in the house.

I bought this set as an addition to other sets that I have bought for my grandchildren. Magnext are a lot of fun for children to play with. The small silver balls are not for children that put toys in their mouths, but my grandchildren 4 and 6 enjoy playing with them. They enable them to use their imagination to make many different things. I still watch them closely to be sure they do not put them near their mouths. The only complaint that I have is that there are very few construction examples included with the set.

I bought these for my 11 year old daughter who loves science. She loves them and plays with them all the time.

My 6 year old son adores Magnext. He got a large set last summer which had a few special pieces in it but he really wanted the "chain" This has that plus so much more. I realize it says it has 100 count but it didn't really sink in how large of a package it would be. It has lots of the silver balls, rods and such. The special parts of course are the shining stars and are very useful and my son has played with them for hours. We have provided him with an old baking pan to make his creations on so he can take them with him wherever he goes without it falling apart. I love how this toy gives them a tool to be creative quickly.

I found the special parts to be a little bit confusing. I still haven't figured out how to really utilize some of them. Better instructions would have been appreciated. However, my main purpose for purchasing it was to add more of the building pieces to our collection, so it did serve that purpose

I have a boy and a girl who both love to build with these toys and I find that we seem to never have enough pieces so I have been adding to our collection. We have had Magnext for a little over a year now with out incident, however 2 weeks ago my son swallowed one of the ball bearings on accident. Until that time I didn't realize how many children have swallowed these. We are not talking about little kids either most are over the age of 6. The balls are not toxic, so doctors just have you wait until it is digested naturally. It took over a week for it to exit my son's body, which is a long scary wait. I guess it would be comparable to if a child swallowed a marble. The actual magnet pieces are secure in very large plastic pieces that would be imposible to swallow. However, for some reason kids of all ages seem to like to put the balls in thier mouths and because of the smoothness and weight of the ball they are very easy to swallow on accident. The bottom line is this, although it is a very fun building toy that kids love to play with I am not sure it is worth the risk.

Received the Magnext Dynamix game for a present to my 6 year old. There is no way we would purchase additional parts. The system just does not work well and is frustrating. There are no directions because I think the makers of this game realize it is just a sub-par game. My son played with it for about 10 minutes and back in the box/shelf it went.

Haven't opened it yet - because it's for the holidays. I ordered 2 sets, and picked up another small one at Toys R Us. You can keeping adding as many different parts as you like. I am sure it's sturdy !
Can't wait til my son open these boxes. He absolutely loves buidling with magnets. WARN YOUR KIDS NOT TO PUT MAGNETS NEAR THE TV OR IT WILL BE RUINED FOREVER! My son waved a magnetic wand over a friends television, and it left a huge blob on the screen. I don't think this toy is for kinds under 5!!!
