As the legend goes, the Lord of the Pyrates, upon dying, ordered his riches to be spread out throughout the world. However, the crew executing the mission was lost at sea and the bounty has never been recovered. With the Maroon Gally playset, kids can enter the pirate world of treachery and skullduggery and create their own scenes relating to the legend. The action figures arrive inside a menacing skull case with one patch eye and one glowing red eye. The back of the skull converts into the base for Maroon Galley, which consists of little more than a dock and a lean-to. Guarding the galley and, presumably some of the treasure, are Noricorpse and Sublurker, two not-quite-dead members of the missing skeleton crew. Equipped with axe, club, and cannon, these eerie corpses pose a threat to Privateer Braggart T. Boyle, who arrives by rowboat in an attempt to take down these vile pirates and recover a portion of the treasure. This playset can be combined with many others in the Pyrates collection (sold separately) for endless swashbuckling adventures on the high seas. --Cristina Vaamonde

I only bought this set to get the two skeleton figures included, but quickly became very attached to the playset. It's very simple and straightforward, takes roughly three minutes to assemble, and has no secret details that won't show up in the picture, but it's very imaginative too. Something about the castaway setting, with its sparse yet sufficient accessories, just inspires fun stories of survival and battle for shelter. I should also add that I like the rowboat that is included, and find the dock to look surprisingly realistic.

Use this with the Man O-War, Ice Fang, or Captain Cutlass pirate ship and you can tell an elaborate story of marooned characters washed upon a small island and cursed to become the walking dead. I don't think any of the other small "booster" sets from Pyrates or Dragons fosters this level of imagination. They're mostly simple battlegrounds for a fight. Maroon Gally stands out as being quite different from the rest.

The three pirates included are fantastic too! Each is super posable (far moreso than the figures from the Dragons series), and each has a highly detailed face and body. Amazingly, the two skeletons have real personality coming through on their faces, even without the benefit of eyes. One looks quite ruthless while the other has the vacant stare of a simple-minded subordinate. The third pirate has a look of ruthless determination on his face. These guys are just begging to star in your (or your child's) own epic adventure!
