3.0 out of 5 stars Nice extras, but it's probably not worth the extra dough, October 19, 2011

This review is from: Mega Man 8 (Video Game)
As most Mega Man fans know, Mega Man 8 on the Sega Saturn is somewhat of a rarity. Originally intended as Saturn exclusive along with the excellent Mega Man X4, this plan quickly changed when Sony made it known they were interested in bringing the games to the PlayStation as well. To the enlightened, such a story is riddled with irony considering it's widely believed Sony was more interested in showing off the 3D capabilities of their system than allowing 2D sidescrollers live on to the next generation. Tongue-in-cheek as it ended up being, in what was more of a tradeoff for the lost of the exclusive, Capcom gave the Saturn version the edge in bonus material. So what's so different about Mega Man 8 on the Saturn compared to the PlayStation? Not much, but enough to make the value of these releases as different as night and day.

As silly as it may seem, I remember being extremely upset that I couldn't fight Cut Man and Wood Man when I played through the PlayStation version all those years ago just because of what console I was playing on. These battles (and the remixed tunes that play during them) are nice touches, as are the sound, music and hidden animation test that appear in the additional bonus mode, but when you get down to it, these things mean ultimately mean little when the whole picture is considered. What am I talking about? Well, before one can really say how much these extras add one must ask how good the core game is. So, for a Mega Man game, how good is Mega Man 8? Does it sail towards the heavens or does it dwell in the darkest depths?

Shallow as it may seem, the deciding factor in Mega Man 8 failure and success ends up being graphics and art direction. Why? Well, when one considers that nothing of significant note has really changed in the gameplay department in eight games you can't really call that a defining element. For better or worse this is true, blue Mega Man. So, given that there is nothing truly new, it's easy to see why a rather superficial element such a graphics becomes important yet this is where the game ends up divided upon itself. From a graphical standpoint the game is beautiful; I have no qualms about the quality of its 2D prowess. So what's the problem? The art direction. As if Mega Man 7 on the SNES wasn't bad enough, Mega Man 8 takes the characters and world we grew up with on the (blissfully limited) NES and shoves them through the cuteness grinder once again.

Now, I expect some to fire back with the argument that Mega Man has always been "cutesy," not necessarily in the games themselves (where the NES thankfully prohibited it) but in official artwork Capcom has produced throughout the years. Point taken, but that doesn't mean we have to indulge this and splash it all over the freaking screen. Okay, I'll admit if I want a dose of stone cold seriousness I could always pop in a Mega Man X game but I find it hysterical how Mega Man 8 is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this. Quite honestly I thought this game would go down as the cuddliest Mega Man game in existence but Capcom proved me wrong with Powered Up on the PSP. What's even more surprising (i.e. downright wrong) is how Mega Man 8 outsold Mega Man X4. Let me repeat that: Mega Man 8 sold more copies than Mega Man X4. How is that even possible? Here we have a game that literally adds nothing to its continuity while Mega Man X4 is a series highlight that gives the original Mega Man X a serious run for its money.

As a product I have to say I somewhat loathe Mega Man 8. I know you can't teach an old dog new tricks but that doesn't stop pet owners from dressing up their dogs in ridiculous outfits. The truth is dogs aren't meant to wear clothes and there's no reason Mega Man needs to look uber cute. What's cute about robots fighting robots? Anyway, as hopelessly off track as I've become, I can't say this bone Capcom threw Saturn owners (it's more like a treat than a bone) is worth the extra green. Stick with the PlayStation version if you're a casual fan and only indulge in this version if you have the obsessive compulsive desire to own everything that is Mega Man.

This review is from: Mega Man 8 (Video Game)
This was the last mega man game to be released on a nineteen system prior to release of Megaman 9 and 10 as deniable games on the Wii if you had and internet connection that worked properly. If you had some add on that I never got. After checking on the meteor. Th evil energy it is taken by the evil doctor Willy and a damaged 5 to 9 feet tall robots know later as due is taken to Doctor Thomas Light's laboratory for repairs. Like the previous seventh game you also have at least one boss fight with the bass. I am going to give you some strategies to beat the bosses without cheats but first here is some advice on how to buy this. The next two cheapest ways you can get this other than by itself for about 30 to 50$ in the original Sega Genesis format. You can either buy this together with the first seven games and the 2 power fighters as hidden unlikable for about 6 to 20 with shipping include maybe if you buy the megaman orignal games collection. On the game cube and other systems. This is fun and and challenging game. Here are some tips on how to beat this game in a 60 to 90 minute with credits excluded and without invariability or infinite energy and stuff like that if you practice enough at dogging and other abilities based on strategies I observed on a 61.27 minute speed run submitted on YouTube about 5 to 6 months ago. For the first crab like none robot master you can take it out in about 12 seconds if you hit it with the ball weapon in the head area enough at a fast enough speed. If you can dodge at leas 15% percent of its attacks or more or. This boss is easy if you know what you're doing. For the first battle with with a Togo man you can take him out in about 13 seconds or less if you practice enough and if can dodge at least 15% to 100% of his attacks movies and hit him at least 2 to 7 times if uses his weakness or charge shots. The charge shouts were toned down for the the later megaman x series. Or in about 80 seconds to a half hour if you don't take to much damage. If you gradually take his health down at a slower rate with normal shoots one shot at a time. Which I don't recommend doing with out invulnerability activated. For the midway boss of Clown Man's stage you can defeat it with about 21 single hits due to a resistance of about 96% and about 2to shot7 or about maybe 15 to 30% percent per hit maybe less. Unfortunately two hit kill bosses I believe became super rare were eliminated after the mega man II due to complaints that it might have mades the game not hard enough for expert and die hard and graphic hore players. who played it before the invulnerability cheats became available in the newer reformatted versions. Cheats. If you use a charge shots or stronger special weapons mid boss weakness seemed to be hard to determine without a decent amount of experience and now actuaral health bar is presented with some bosses. This is one of the easier bosses in the game if you memorize his somewhat limited attack pattern. The kid had this mid boss down in less than five minute due to his fast conteract and very good doging speed. This player only took about about 5% to 15% of the total damage this boss need to caused a termination and loss of a life. For clown man the first time I recommend hit him as fast as you can with the tornado attack this kid took him down with about7 tornado attacks and one single fire shoot in about 10 to 45 second more or less this may take you some practicing to get used to conctoring butr don't underestimate clown many he has high attack stregth for one with such low resitance to this attack for you might want to save up your bolts to by and energy tank or create one since he can kill you easily this kid got luck and only lots about 2/3 of his health bar mostly do to a super strong long eletric lighting like attack like used by the sith in starwars exclude Darth Maul and Darth Vader. Side not unlike in megaman 2 through 7 when you pick one of the eight ronbot master automatically you have to do these master in two sets of four the first four you can pick from are grenade man, clown man and not sure about the other two. The midway boss can do heavy damage due to his barrier similar to that of planet man and can easily take you down to 7/10 health or lower if it touches ytou enough. This kid was maybe a mear maybe 30 second away from a rematch maybe less and he is not saving either that's how good he thinks he is Hit this floating eye ball with as many charged shot as you can and try to have a couple of energy tanks by paying bolts to by or created them as back up since they full or partial heal you I belive the effect varies per game. This may extend the battle if you take to much damage and allow you to death this anoying mid boss. Grenade man has high speed an attack stregth so hit will 12 of the energy wipe beam like weapon will doging about 10 90% of his attacks and you should be able to defeat him. This kid took about 7/10 of the max damage do to a couple of missed blows and the floor drop away floor midway through the battle. Starting around frost man you are one A SURF board the jumping and slide can be a problem due to the fast speed even though a voice literally tells you when to do depending on how quickly you master the button commands to performed jumps and slide at the proper time. Depsite frost mans huge size being the biggest boss in the megaman series that was a main robot master exlcuding the sub bossed. He can be taken out easily about 4 to 12 directlt flash bombs can defeat him since the flash bomb is and multiple hit weapon some times doing 2 to 3 hit or about 5 to 15% more or less damage per dentonation if frost man is with in a close enough blast range when denotated since it has and extend lasting time. You doe this fast enough and you could clear it with only about a measly 3 to ten percent of the max damaged revived. For the boss fight with the robot do is sucess use a combination of highy and light attacks because DUO is one your side like protoman after he got repaired after temporarily go bad in tduring the first three installments. He does not have and energy meter so to tell how much damage he is taking but I guess charge and normal single shots should be about the same. After this battle there is the second and film animation seqeunce which the kid skipped to get trhough the game in under 70 mintues as well as the first the other two seqeunces and ending the credits which are not shown. The kid beat him with about 15 hits from the light bomb like weapon which mean he has a resitance of about 28.5% percent a rough guess I counted correctly. For the mid ways boss of the robot with the saw for a had about ten flash dombing blast on the jewel when it exposed will blow this boss to bits. About 11 direct hits if you combine full power mega buster and frost mans ability will take this boss done due to a 50% percent resistance of these two attack when they are both used instead of just one. For search man he has about 50% rsitance so 11 directly hit from the previous boss flame sword like attack will kill him or for a possible quicker result fight you can try to defeat him by hit with abut 7 full power mega buster shots which he only has about a 20% to 30% percent resitane to if you think you can doge at least ten percent or more of his total attacks he unless one you during this shoot feast. Here is my advice for the astro man the first time. Astro man has a some what height ristance against the canno ball like attack ability taking 14 hit to take down given hima 50 to 70% resitance if you want do to thi in half the time used the full power charge shout him seven about seven causing double the damage per hit if you think you can doge or prevnt at least ten percent or more of his attacks hre is possibly of unless if given the chance if you have fast anoth reaction commands to counter like this kid barely get any damge done to himself. The half way boss through aqua man stages can be defeated with about 9 hits from the flam sword given it about a 42 to 45% resitent when it is not hit when invulerable or under water and about has about a 30% resitance to charge shot which did a max of three bars worh of damage if at full power after it was introduce in between mega man games 2-5. Aqua man is one of the pumpest robot master boss in the whole game next only have about a 33% total resitance when you alternate between hit him withpower max buster shots anda meteor shower like attack similar to that used my blackheart if you played the now ridiculously over priced on Amazon Second Marvel versus capcom game. I seems I left out cloud man some how. Cloud man ironically is week against a water bubble attack similar to that used by bubble man in the second installment about 4 to 7 hit while defeat him giving him as resitance strength about the same or sligtly higher than that of aqua man. You will re fight the eight master bosses again at the end before facing Willy since there weakness barely change about the same startegies as listed before wil worrk if you can still contiue to dodge or prevent at a least 15/100 or more of they unless or are capable of unlessing. Here is a stragety I recommend for the punch bag boss in the first willy lair section. If this boss is not effected by the meteor attack is to high of the ground to hit with the mega buster without hacking in with a cheat buster and active flying megaman if avilable. You time this and angle right and score eight direct hitswith the ball attack will take him down due to only about 30 to 40% resitance to this attack. The ship boss for thew second stage is super weak against a full powwer charge metewor attack four directy atacks will tak e it out this has the lowest resitance of all the boss if this special ability is only about 19 to 23 percent so about 7/10 of the time...
