With the Mega Man games achieving high status on the NES, Capcom decided to take advantage of the hand held department and released the very first portable Mega Man game in 1991. Before we go into the GOOD and BAD of this game, let me tell you that this game was the very first Mega Man game I ever completed. So in that respect, this game helped me get into the Mega Man franchise, even though I had played the first two prior to this game (again, this one I beat before them.). Read on or die:

THE GOOD
The graphics and animation transfer well from the NES counterpart and we get to fight four bosses from the first game. After you defeat them, you fight four from Mega Man 2 (this cycle continues and ends at Mega Man IV.). The music was also good, some of them new including the Wily stages. It's also interesting to see a change on the bosses; examples: Cut Man's nastier and Elec Man is tamer, Fire Man's weapon is good against Quick Man, and so forth. And may I also state that the game is reasonably difficult... not "kick you in the [...] and make you love it" difficult like the first Mega Man for NES, but certainly not an easy venture. Capcom also created an extra boss specifically for this game: Enker. He's one of my FAVORITE robotmasters ever created. His weapon may seem useless, but... well, you'll figure it out. One last thing: YOU'LL LOVE THE ENDING.

THE BAD
There are two things I didn't like about the game. I wish it had more plot involved, and that isn't too much of a gripe, but Mega Man 2 (NES) basically had the same type and had more storyline involved (Dr. Wily wants to exact revenge upon Mega Man, hence the game's subtitle). Secondly, the game is actually not that hard, but it's made even more difficult because of the game boy's tiny screen, which makes him have a lower lifebar and smaller surroundings.

OVERALL
Aside from a couple bads, this is an enjoyable Mega Man adventure. I grew up with this game, so that might be why I like it so much. Nevertheless, nostalgia aside, it's certainly not a bad game. Mega Man fans, give this one a shot. In any event, hopefully this can be a good introduction into this phenomenal and legendary video game series as it was for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game...., November 11, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Mega Man (Game Cartridge)
I just bought this game a few days ago from a store. I started to get interested in Mega Man games so i thought why not give it a shot. I bought the original instead of the 2nd mega man game which was a bit more $$$. I have to say it is a great game. I got the hang of it after a few tries. I have to say this is a GREAT mega man game to start of with.

4.0 out of 5 stars My first introduction to Mega Man, February 9, 2003
This review is from: Mega Man (Game Cartridge)
This was the first Mega Man game I ever got. The difficulty was hard, but not nearly as impossible as some other reviewer mentioned. The shots do tend to be slower than on its NES counterpart, but it's amazing how well it's transferred to the Game Boy's small screen. Very fun and very challenging, with an excellent ending as well! Heartily recommended to Mega Man fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars The blue bomber made his debut (3.5 stars), September 28, 2011

Capcom was one of the NES's biggest supporters and at the time, they had a lot of success with their Mega Man franchise. After releasing three games for the NES, they decided to release Mega Man games on the Game Boy. Their first one, Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, was released in 1991 to critical acclaim and success. Finally, the Blue Bomber made his debut on Nintendo's portable system and while it blended elements from the NES games, it had its share of flaws that kept it from being as good as it could have been.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge takes elements from Mega Man and Mega Man 2 while adding new music, alternate stage layouts, a new enemy robot and featuring Dr. Wily. Once again, Mega Man must stop Dr. Wily from taking over the world. You choose any one from the four stages available and each one has a Robot Master at the end waiting to take you out (from the NES Mega Man game.) Shoot all the enemies, avoid the traps and defeat each Robot Master to acquire their special weapons. Once you complete all four stages, you must complete two more: one of them features a new Robot Master to defeat while the other had you face off against four more Robot Masters (from the NES Mega Man 2 game.) Only after beating all of these robots that you must defeat Dr. Wily. The game offers a password after you beat the four stages in the beginning so you can continue from where you left off later on.

The PROS: The game plays like the NES versions so anyone who is familiar with those games will feel right at home here. The graphics were good for its time, controls are good and the music were different versions that you heard from the NES Mega Man game. The game featured robots from Mega Man and Mega Man 2 but had different attack patterns so you had to adjust your shooting skills accordingly. This game was also very hard so it will challenge anyone looking to play the game.

The CONS: The game was hard but not only because the difficulty level was set high. The stage layouts didn't offer a lot of room for mistakes and they demanded precise jumping and accurate shooting. Avoiding enemies and bullets was next to near impossible so it was a matter of in depth memorization and some luck if you made it through. I died a lot of times and most other players had done the same. It's also very short as the entire game had 6 stages compared to 10 stages for Mega Man and 14 stages for Mega Man 2.

Future Game Boy renditions fared out better than Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge but as the first Game Boy title, it did a decent job. It provided a portable Mega Man game, featured elements from the NES versions while offering different stage layouts, alternate music tracks and a new Robot Master exclusive to the Game Boy game. It was terribly hard not because it was really difficult but because you had to have perfect platform and shooting skills. If you're looking to play this game, be warned of the flaws and if you can get past them, then you might just enjoy it. It was just recently released on the Nintendo e-Shop for the 3DS as a virtual console title so that's the best way to experience this game immediately.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice game, but like the NES original it isn't without it's flaws, July 24, 2011

Love it or hate it, Mega Man games grow like leaves on trees. Given the vast amount of success Mega Man enjoyed during the early years of the NES, it was only natural that some version of the game would end up on Nintendo's portable, gray brick. Mega Man: Dr.Wily's Revenge (known as Rockman World in Japan) would mark the beginning of yet another series of titles for the blue bomber, one of the first Capcom would outsource rather than develop internally.

Given that this title is often referred to as "Mega Man" given the lack of subtitle on the title screen, the first thing most people do is compare this to the 1987 original. This makes since the game borrows from that game, presenting four of its six robot masters. While Cut Man, Elec Man, Ice Man and Fire Man reappear in all their glory, everything else is new, or rather a mix of things from Mega Man and Mega Man II. For example, while Elec Man's level will remind one of the area they played through on the NES, it's crossed with elements that were used Air Man's level in Mega Man II. It's an interesting hybrid to be sure, but the allure can be cut short facing your first robot master without the aid of the correct weapon.

Annoying as that is, things get back on track pretty quickly. The damage incurred from robot master weapons and enemies is much more balanced in this rendition, so you won't get blown away as quickly. Unfortunately, trouble again rears its ugly head during the game's concluding levels. While the first Wily level can be tough with its five concluding battles, nothing compares to the last. I love a challenge as much as the next guy but the final level is too big for it britches and throws everything it can at the player. As one can imagine, this puts quite the damper on the proceedings but there are other areas of the game that help make up for it like the excellent soundtrack. Seriously, I can't be the only one who blares Cut Man and Fire Man's theme from the back of my car, can I?

Regardless of my weakness for delectable 8-bit chiptunes, Mega Man: Dr.Wily's Revenge stands as a solid, portable take of the Mega Man we all know and love. I wish the concluding levels of the game were a little more forgiving than they currently are but I can think of games that are guilty of far more. Still, take the above a grain of salt, because the game is definitely capable of making one grind their teeth no matter how one sugarcoats it.

This is basically the NES version of Megaman repackaged for Game Boy. It's decent for a handheld version, but the NES version is better, in my opinion. This game doesn't have much of a story, and the small screen makes gameplay a little harder than on the NES Megaman series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smaller screen? No problem., January 25, 2011

This review is from: Mega Man (Game Cartridge)
As any Capcom guy would know, MegaMan is the hardest game series the company had ever created. Ever since the original NES version, it was hard. But it was still a great game. The Game Boy version, released after the NES sequel, was no exception.

The Game Boy's smaller screen caused some slight changes to the formula. For example, MegaMan seems to have slightly less HP than in the NES games. However, there's less in the game's layout, too. So it kinda evens out.

The sounds and music are also sounding different. Well, the music is carried over from MegaMan on the NES, but different 8-Bit instruments are used. Some sound effects are totally different, such as the Mega Buster sounds.

The game has 4 robot masters compared to the NES game's 6. Even though the game is easier than the NES games, it's still pretty hard for people that aren't hardcore MegaMan fans. If you are one of those people, it'll take a while to get past all the robot masters and reach Dr. Wily. The precise controls, the tricky pathways, and difficult situations are all present. Fortunately, once you reach a robot master, it's possible you may beat him right away, or you lose a life or two and THEN beat him.

The downside to the bosses is the weaknesses. They are off. For example, when I tried fighting Iceman, I used Fireman's power (Reasonable, right?), but it didn't do a whole lot of damage. Then I tried Elecman's power, and it took him out in 3 or 4 hits. (Edit: Never mind. This isn't actually an error.)

In Dr. Wily's stage, things are just plain unforgiving the first time you play through it (Thank god for Passwords). There will be spikes in places you least expect, traps that seal you to your doom, etc. Also, before you fight Dr. Wily, you must battle 4 MORE robots from MegaMan 2 (NES game)! Be sure to get your powers ready, because you're in for a short marathon.

But after this, you go through one last level. Then, you reach Dr. Wily at last, who is actually pretty easy once you get this pattern down: Use Quickman's power to shoot off the his robot's mouth, and then use the Energy Buster to reflect Wily's lasers, while avoiding a robo-claw that reaches for you.

All of these events are packed into 6 levels of run 'n gun fun. Yeah, it's possible you can beat this game in 20-30 minutes, but at least you will have fun doing it.

Overall, this is a really great game for the classic Game Boy. If you have a Game Boy, a Game Boy Color, or even a Game Boy Advance, itching for some classic MegaMan action, this is the game for you. If you are new to MegaMan, this should be a good place to start (Other than the Game Boy sequel, MegaMan II).

4.0 out of 5 stars A must buy for classic gamers!!!, November 24, 2010

This product is a must buy for any classic gamer who wants a fun, enjoyabe experience. The game was released in 1991 when the gameboy was ranked #1 in handhelds. Capcom trying to expand into the portable market released Megaman Dr wily's revenge (also known as rockman world in Japan) for the gameboy. The game was a best seller and it America snached the game up right when it came out.

PLOT: Megaman isn't know for it's "detailed plots" and that's the same case here. The plot is Dr Wily sends his old robot masters from megaman 1 to contend with our hero megaman. Those robot masters are iceman, fireman, cutman, and elecman. After that he heads to Dr Wily's castle to fight 4 more robot masters from megaman 2 (but wthout playing through their stages) bubbleman, heatman, flashman, and quickman. When megaman finally defeates those 4 robots he faces Enker, a robot desined by Dr Wily where it's only objective is to destroy megaman (megaman killer). Last you confront the evil sientist Dr. Wily and bring peace back to the world once again.

GAMEPLAY: Megaman Dr. Wily'srevenge is pretty much the same as it's NES counterparts. You can play any of the 4 robot master stages in any order you want. There is also a numerous amount of enemys that are in each of the 4 stages as well as the wily stages. Some enemys will randomly drop items that will replenish megaman's health, give him an extra life, and even replenish his wepon energy. The whole game works like rock, paper, sissors. A robot master is weaker than a certian wepon but stronger than a cerian wepon. Once you defeat a boss or robot master you get there wepon in which you use to defeat another boss. Plus once you defeat Enker you get his wepon to!

DIFFICULTY: Megaman Dr Wily's revege is more difficult than other megaman games. You will usually die about 1 or 2 times between each of the stages although this is a drag it still is a very fun game

This megama game is proboaly the one of the best and is an instant classic!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too hard to be fun or innovative, July 6, 2002

This review is from: Mega Man (Game Cartridge)
Take everything wrong with Mega Man 1 and 2 on the NES and you get this. Your fired shots travel WAY TOO SLOW on the Game Boy, and these stages, especially the Fortress and Space Station at the end of the game, are NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE! Plus if you lose in either you have to start over, and that means if you die at the end of the Fortress, at the hands of a Robot Leader, you have to fight the whole way back to them, and any you beat must be beaten again.

ROBOT LEADERS WAVE ONE: Elec Man, Cut Man, Fire Man, Ice Man
FORTRESS ROBOT LEADERS: Bubble Man, Flash Man, Heat Man, Quick Man, and ?

This ain't no masterpiece and is for Mega Man die-hards only.
