4.0 out of 5 stars First story is excellent, second story fun but not great., August 19, 2011

This review is from: Mega Man Gigamix Volume 1 (Paperback)
Excellent artwork. The two stories in this Gigamix Volume 1 are: Asteroid Blues and Burning Wheel. Each story takes up half the book.

Asteroid Blues is superb. The artwork is excellent, the story is interesting and has a serious tone/atmosphere to it. There are about a dozen recognizable robots from the Mega Man series. Drawings are similar to the cover and the quality is present throughout. I loved the first story although I feel the ending is too short/quick.

The second story, Burning Wheel is more cartoony, has jokes, and is much less serious in tone. I wasn't a fan of the second story. It's about a race, the "Battle and Chase" race, and I didn't enjoy it as much. But the artwork is still great.

Because this is Manga, the artwork is all black & white, and you read the book backwards which does not take anything away from what we are normally used to in US comics.

I really enjoyed the small pencil drawings of Dr. Wily's robots in the beginning of the book. Recommended if you are a Megaman fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book containing a continuation of the Megamix storyline!, January 3, 2012
This review is from: Mega Man Gigamix Volume 1 (Paperback)
First off, the Megamix series is great and I highly recommend checking it out before reading the Gigamix series. This volume contains two different stories, both of which follow certain chapters from the Megamix storyline (the creator elaborates on this in more detail in afterthoughts, which is a bonus feature of this volume).

The first story is action-packed and has a lot of great detail to its artwork, alongside a really great storyline. It deals mainly with the villains from MegaMan 3 and centers around MegaMan, Dr. Light and Dr. Wily teaming up to work on a super-powered robot that can excavate a mysterious asteroid containing powerful energized crystals. Dr. Wily is promised to be released from jail if he cooperates successfully with their machine, but what else lies in store as Dr. Light and MegaMan put their trust into their greatest enemy?

The second story centers around a race competition in which Roll participates, but MegaMan finds out that a bomb has been planted on her vehicle and will be detonated if she reaches the finish line. MegaMan must stop this from happening, and we get to see many guest appearances from villains from MegaMan 1 and MegaMan 7. This story has some action and the storyline is pretty good, but I personally feel like it is the weaker chapter in this volume due to its pure campiness. The first chapter is much more serious and has very little humor in it, and to see the drastic change in tone between the two stories just feels strange.

Overall, I give this volume 5 stars. I didn't like the second story as much as the first in this volume, but they both have an excellent quality to them in regards to storytelling, artwork, etc. and they're a lot of fun to read! If you enjoy the Blue Bomber, then check it out. I never read manga before I picked up a copy of Gigamix vol. 1, and I like it a lot! (And don't worry: they explain how to read manga. It's not hard at all!)

I am not sure why this is called Gigamix, as this is basically a continuation of the story already established in the three Megamix books. You get the Robot Bosses of Megaman 7 (borrowing a few other things from the game as well) and a cool bonus story that serves as a sort of inbetweenquel to earlier Mega Man games. The artwork for Gigamix is as solid, so if you have the Megamix books, definitely buy this because you can see this as Megamix Vol. 4.
