The basic idea of a Mega Man game is you have your stage select screen, play through the selected stage, beat the boss, get his power and use that weapon against the next boss. After all 8 bosses are destroyed, you face Dr. Wily in his castle usually consisting of 4 stages.
This was actually a very good game, but was pretty hard many times. This game is still black and white. With any other Gameboy, you can bring out the color. The stage select is pretty cool. You don't have the standard select screen like the other games, instead, you see the 4 boss's graphics the spin around some kind of axis to give a 3-d scrolling look to it. Some of the stages seemed like ports from the NES versions, but were slightly changed. For Mega Man IV, instead of creating original music like in Mega Man II, they ported the music over and trimmed it a bit to match the GB soundchip. The controls are great. You can run easily, slide, charge your power-shot, climbing ladders isn't slow (for a Gameboy's standard), and jumping is perfect height. The stages are all good in length so they don't drag on, but are not over quickly like in some other games.
In the Mega Man GB series, you fight 4 bosses, fight a mid-boss, then play against 4 other bosses usually from another Mega Man game. The first 4 bosses are Toadman, Pharaohman, Ringman, and Brightman. These 4 are all from Mega Man 4 NES. Next you see a new character named Ballade which is pretty tough the second time you fight him. Afterwards, you fight 4 more bosses which are Crystalman, Napalmman, Stoneman, and Chargeman which are all actually from Mega Man 5 NES.
After all the bosses are destroyed, you must play through Dr. Wily's castle and challenge against him.
This is one of the more difficult Mega Man games. I recommend playing this on a TV with a Gameboy Player on Gamecube or Super-Gameboy.
