I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the thickness of this volume. I thought it'd be a thin little manga, but it was pretty thick! I've been a big fan of the Mega Man series for a long time. Japan always got these fantastic stories of Mega Man that really helped create a universe all on their own.

Now we finally can read this manga artists' interpretation of the legendary video game character created in 1987. This manga is his vision/interpretation of what the Mega Man games released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) would be like in story format.

After finishing the manga, I have to say I was really satisfied! I can't wait for the next volume and any Mega Man fan will be sure to love this. Udon Entertainment is doing a great job and service for Mega Man fans by bringing various Mega Man products/books to the US.

I'll admit first off that I haven't had a whole lot of exposure to manga as an entertainment medium beyond this Zelda series and a few others, but I do love me some classic video game series, and Mega Man is definitely at the top of my list. When I read the acclaim these Mangas by Hitoshi Ariga have garnered, I decided to take the plunge and get this first volume, recently translated and published in English by the always fantastic Udon Entertainment publishing company.

Mega Man is a series where the story has always been merely a backdrop tool to introduce and justify the action of the games. The premise and story of the games are undeniably charming, but don't really have a whole lot to spin a compelling yarn like you'd need for a story in this art form. That been said, creative liberties were taken on the author's part, but they are really fantastic. You can tell that Hitoshi has a real feel for the spirit of Mega Man and what he's all about and as a result, these stories fit right in with what you'd expect and hope for from a more in-depth Mega Man story. I genuinely enjoyed every page in this fantastic volume. It was a real delight for me to see the personalities he gave to the Robot Masters, as pretty much every one is awesome and totally unique. The events within are essentially pulled from the timeline of the first three classic NES Mega Man titles, and they're all really compelling, humorous, and completely enjoyable. Some are retelling of the actual game's stories, and others are somewhat supplementary to the games, but all are fantastic.

Also worth noting is the fact that nothing was lost in translation.

After a long wait I can finally read these great Manga instead of just looking at the very nice artwork.
The little color "poster" inside the cover was a nice surprise, as were the sketches and character bio's and creator interview in the back of the book.

I'd reccomend it to all Mega Man fans out there.

I have always wanted to read the Rockman manga over the years. But they were never localised into English but I have seen them in Chinese in Hong Kong (localised by Taiwanese publishers). Megamix puts the story behind the 8 bit games fans remember fondly from their childhoods and although the original Megaman series were more aimed to be "child-friendly" (and the Megaman X series as darker and more sinister) the author blends a a good mix of action and comedy into the work.

The first volume covers both Megaman games 1 and 2. That is to say the enemies encountered are covered in these games. Th interactions between the boss robots & Megaman build on the game's roots on their background as both robots with souls and tools created for humans.

It is a series I can see being a light read that can lead into the darker evolution of the Megaman X series if the manga-ka/author continues the work into that series. Similar to the way "Dragonball" became a more sci-fi/action oriented story when the characters grew up and the series became "Dragonball Z".

the only gripe I have with Volume 1 is that some fights seem rushed/unshown. The bosses that we fans may have struggled for hours to beat after finally passing the difficult platforming levels, are shown beaten too easily by Megaman. But that author didn't show these fights and the strategies Megaman himself used to beat them - with his own MegaBuster or with the weapons from the previous bosses. What is shown is the victorious aftermath with the boss on the ground neutralised. It would have been nice to see some bosses cringe at their own comrade's special ability by being frozen to the ground/melting away/slowing to a shudder.... SOMETHING!

I've never read manga before in my life, but I started reading this and the Gigamix series because I'm a big fan of Megaman. I must say, I am hooked! It's entertaining, funny, and it's a joy to see the Blue Bomber in an action-packed story such as this.

In this volume, the stories deal with the birth of MegaMan, his confrontation with the robot master villains from the first 3 MegaMan games, and a dramatic story that puts more depth into the character Yellow Devil (from the first MegaMan game). We see how MegaMan went from being the regular robot Rock to the combat warrior MegaMan, and I thought it was very interesting to see MegaMan befriend several of the robot master villains from the games -- giving it a unique twist to its story. The end of the volume has bonus content: character profiles and an interview with Keiji Inafune, the creator of Megaman.

I'm so glad that Udon has been transcribing a lot of their Megaman stuff for the Western world. They have more stuff coming on the way, and I'm looking forward to checking it out!

The entire Megamix series is awesome. I highly recommend checking it out!
