Mega Man X was a great series on the Super Nintendo and it continues on the Playstation. In these side scrolling games, you control a humanoid robot known as X. Although based loosely on the original Mega Man series from the days of the NES, the story of X takes place in something of an alternate universe. Both X and his comrade Zero are Maverick Hunters. Their objective is to destroy aberrant robots, known as Mavericks. The Mavericks are led by Sigma, who is the personification of a computer virus. The X series is often considered to be darker and more sophisticated looking than the original series.

In this particular game, you can choose to be either X or Zero. X controls much like the original Mega Man did. He can walk, jump, and shoot his Buster cannon. He can also cling to walls, something exclusive to the X series. Zero, on the other hand, controls in fundamentally the same way, but his weapons are different. Zero has no long range attacks, only a lightsabre type of sword. It's arguably harder to go through the game using Zero.

As per the usual Mega Man routine, you are pitted against eight bosses. They are Web Spider, Split Mushroom, Cyber Peacock, Storm Owl, Magma Dragoon, Frost Walrus, Jet Stingray, and Slash Beast. You get to pick who you want to fight first. After going through their respective levels (typically based around themes like snow, fire, and so forth), you fight the Mavericks themselves. Upon defeating them, you get to take their weapon that you can, in turn, use against a different Maverick. Zero's system is a bit different, as you get skills, not weapons. Such skills are executed in a manner not unlike most fighting games (like Street Fighter II). After dispatching the eight bosses, you are taken to the final showdown against Sigma himself.

The new things in X4, besides the ability to play as Zero and the obvious graphic enhancements, also include anime cutscenes, a game saving ability (instead of passwords), and more bizarre animal bosses. Of note, all of the bosses have a sort of "desperation" attack that they use when their energy runs low. A nice touch.

The graphics in this game are big and detailed. The levels are lavishly designed, but they aren't as long as their Super Nintendo counterparts. The music is still in the power synth style used in the original games. One thing that got annoying was the sound effects. The robots tend to shout or yelp whenever you have them jump or shoot. This can get on your nerves.

Play control is top notch, although you might want to reconfigure your controller setup so dash is one of the upper buttons instead of the default Circle button. The game isn't overly hard as X, but you'll find quite a challenge in beating the game using Zero.

Overall, if you enjoyed the first three X games, here's another one to satisfy you.

By owning this game, you can trust what i have to say about the game. I enjoy mega man games emminsely and have played almost all of them to date, and i think this one keeps the beet going on. Like X3 you are mega man going aroung fighting a certain number of cybernetic animals in futuristic worlds. Unlike most mega man's you have seen, in X4 you can choose to be either Mega Man or his friend Zero. Zero is a little difficult to get the hang of because he uses a sword, not the X-buster. What is neat is you still are looking for those capsules that give you enhancment parts to your suit. One little bump in the road for me is the endless amount of "Final" Bosses. It seems to necer end, there are literally over 7 bosses you half to fight after you defeat the normal bosses. But i throughly enjoy this game as i do most mega man's, and i would reccommend this to any hardcore mega man fan, like myself:)

MMX4 is a very good game of its type. It's gameplay is identical to the other MMX games on the SNES, but that's not a bad thing if you enjoyed the first 3 games. The anime scenes are a nice addition, and the little introductions before boss battles add a bit of atmosphere to the game. Overall, a very well-done game, if side scrolling action's your thing.

This one of the best Mega Man X games capcom has ever made. The anime cut scenes look great, and the story is amazing as you play as Zero you learn his a lot about his past in this one. This is a definte must have for Mega Man fans and if you play this for the first time you will be a Mega Man fan. Man oh man I love this game so much!!!

Mega Man X4 is the second best game in the X series.

Pros:
-2 different scenarios: play as X and receive various arm-shot weapons, or play as Zero and learn various sword techniques.
-Beautiful 2D graphics.
-New parts system.
-Bosses are new in style.
-Beautifully animated anime cutscenes.
-Cool new characters.

Cons:
-A little easy sometimes.
-HORRIBLE voice acting!

The bottom line: this is a very fun game to play, but there is one thing you might want to hear: Zero is not for beginners. His moves are much harder to learn. However, masters should challenge themselves playing it with Zero. If you enjoyed the first three (X3 is the best), then I highly recommend this.

I've been playing Mega Man games since the late eighties, and this is one of my favorites. In fact, it may be my favorite in the X series. I've had it since it was first released in 1997 and I still play it occasionally now. This game is so cool! You get to play as X or Zero, you get anime cut scenes that tell the story, plus there's even blood and a little mild profanity despite the KA rating(now E). The challenge level is just right. I never found this game too easy like X2, but it was never too hard either. I've literally beaten this game dozens of times, so the replay value is pretty good too.

The story was actually very interesting in this game. I don't think X, Zero, and the "Irregular Hunters" were actually in the right. You seem almost like tyrants in this game and even more so in the next game. If a reploid has his own ideas then...
Well I'm probably one of the few fans who is so interested in the story. Isn't this just the Blade Runner story anyway?

At any rate, this is the last great 2D Mega Man game. I highly recommend it. The Megaman Legends games are really funny in their own weird way, but it's not the same as good old fashioned Mega Man.

This was the best game for the X series. It got everything unlike X5 and X6. It has movie scenes. You get to play as zero which is best for andvanced players. Oh yeah you get to see a lot more movies then megaman. The bad thing in this game is if you play with zero there are bosses who has no weaknesses and its kind of hard to tell what there weaknesses are. Like how are you suppose to know that a mushroom would be weak to lightning. The first two MMX games you can tell who is weak to what. You got to be really stupid to not tell unless you never learned about it.
For megaman it is a lot easier to play with because you don't have to stand in front of them to ... them and then sigma is a ... as long as you have the nova armor.

Many people are tired of Mega Man and his dozens of games, but those people are also missing out on a great gaming experience. This is one of his best and it would be a shame to pass up. Sure the gameplay is basically the same as before, but what's wrong with that? The graphics and sound are still great and the story is more serious than other games in the series. Don't miss out on this.

Mega Man X4 (1997). The fourth episode in the seven part spin-off series, and first one to be released on Playstation.

Not many decade-long-running series of games stay true to their roots, but for the Mega Man series, keeping the same old-school, 2-D platform, nostalgic gameplay is a given. Critics hate the never-changing evolution of Mega Man, but real fans (like me) love it and take it in any form it comes. Here we have X4, one of the best and my second favorite X game (X3 is my favorite). This was my first X game I've ever owned and so it holds a special place to me. Now I will go over the pros and cons to X4 in terms of gameplay, graphics, sound, etc.:

PROS:
-First of all, THE ANIME CUTSCENES ARE PHENOMENAL. They not only have quality Japanese animation, but they also enhance the storytelling of the game. Sadly, this is the only X game you will ever see anime cutscenes in (unless you track down an EXTREMELY RARE copy of X3 for the PS or Saturn).
-Secondly, the story itself. X4's storyline is very well put together. It starts out with Magma Dragoon destroying sky lab and bringing it down on a city full of people, killing them. X and Zero, of course, demand to know why a reploid of the repliforce caused this terrible catastrophe. However, Colonel (2nd leader of the repliforce) refuses to surrender to X, and so the entire repliforce wages war against the Maverick Hunters. This was all really caused by Sigma, who was playing both sides to get them to fight each other. I like the addition of the sub-characters (Double and Iris), and how they play key roles in each of the main characters' storylines. I won't reveal any more of the story, so as not to spoil the game endings.
-The new feature of playing as either X or Zero. SIMPLY AWESOME. You could do that in the previous game, but here is where you can choose who to play through the entire game. X is better for shooting long range, whereas Zero is more of a melee fighter.
-Gameplay-wise, the action in the series couldn't get any better. There are certainly plenty of enemies and things to shoot, no matter where you go. Most aren't too hard, but they do provide enough challenge so as to keep you busy.
-The sound effects are a major improvement over what the Super Nintendo could do. Likewise, THE MUSIC HERE IS PERFECT FOR AN X GAME. It's sort of a japanese 80's style techno-hardrock soundtrack. I love it. Most every track is memorable and goes well with each stage and the pace of the action.
-I like how many of the stages have new elements thrown in that were not used before. For instance, in Cyber Peacock's stage, you must race to the end, and if you make it fast enough, you get a bonus. Slash Beast's stage is on a moving train. Plus, I thought it was clever to reward the players in Magma Dragoon's stage in letting them use the robot-ride-armor to fight the boss if they make it through the stage unscathed.

CONS:
-The only thing wrong with the anime cutscenes is the voice acting. Like in Mega Man 8, and in a lot of anime, THE VOICE ACTING IS TERRIBLE. It comes off as annoying, especially X's voice. WHY DO THEY HAVE TO MAKE HIM SOUND LIKE AN 8 YEAR OLD GIRL?? Still, having anime cutscenes with bad voice acting is better than having no anime at all.
-While the action itself is outstanding, I thought that X4's stages, in comparison to other games, are WAY TOO SHORT, EASY, AND LINEAR. There's only one path, and the continue points make all the stages shorter. Jet Stingray's stage can be beaten in less than two minutes, which to me seems like the programmers are just being lazy. Plus, there are not very many secrets, and all of them are rather easy to find. Not bad, but a letdown from X3's more complex level structures and secret collecting.
-I think that there should have been a way to switch back and forth between characters at the stage select screen. Fortunately, this problem is remedied in X5 and X6. It's not really that big of a deal, though.

Overall, even though there are minor setbacks which keep it from being perfect, X4 is still by far one of the best in the series. It's very easy to find and a great way for newbees to get into the X series. The next two games turned out to be a mixed bag of sorts (X5 was made for beginners, and X6 for hardcore fans. Go figure). So what are you waiting for? Get equipped with bubble lead and go buy this game right now!

The other day I ordered the Mega Man X collection to relieve old nostalgic memories, and one game I was ready to play was this one. I can say that this is probably the best of the X series, though I still need to play the others again first.

STORY: Basically, Sigma manipulates Repliforce to fight against the Maverick Hunters, and it's up to X or Zero to save the day. Not too complicated, but on Zero's story, it digs deeper into his origins.

GRAPHICS: It's quite interesting to see 2D graphics on a system that mostly is 3D, as the sprites are clean, colorful, and fluid. Even though they look outdated by today's standards. The game also has several anime cutscenes, which all flow smoothly.

MUSIC: Unlike the first three, the music isn't really guitar oriented, but still nice to listen to.

SOUND/VOICE ACTING: The sounds, well, what can I say. Gunshots, explosions, all that good stuff. The voice acting is AWFUL, especially X's voice.

GAMEPLAY: It's the first game where you can fully play as Zero, who is more melee than X. Zero uses his Z Saber and instead of getting weapons from bosses, he learns new moves. Basically, it's like your average Mega Man game, but it has new twists, such as the ability to save, the fact that stages are divided into two parts, and there are more types of tanks to collect. The weapons and bosses are fun and innovative, especially when playing as Zero.

BUY?: I say get it, whether it's an emulator, in the X Collection, or on a regular PSX disc. Although it's short, it packs a lot of punch.
