Here's a tip - don't shake it up and down. Turn the unit upside down so that the back of the unit is facing the ceiling and shake it side to side. My older son (7) uses that method and he can get it to recover quickly and find viruses as easy as pie. I actually took this sucker apart - the motion detection unit is actually a small metal marble that rolls over a circuit board contact - be careful taking it apart tho - its would be easy to lose the marble and then it would never work.
The battery has also lasted for us 2 weeks under fairly strong use - he's up to level 16. My yonger son (5) also has one and while he's not as enthralled - no problems.

3.0 out of 5 stars EXPLAINING Whats Bad and Whats Good, September 5, 2005

A review by Kole.
I thought about getting the Megaman PET for a long time. And finally one day I decided to buy it. I broght it home and opened it up (Please readers, see directions before using, don't waste your time). The directions said to shake the PET up and down to find a virus. I shook and shook and shook for ever! it took me about 15 minutes or more to find a virus. Finally, a battle! Well the battle was suprisingly short and hard, it was fun for the minute it lasted though. Also, the screen show the same animation for any chips you use. Wide sword will show Megaman shooting, everything will. But what was cool was that the virus's move on a 3 by 3 grid that you must move where your attack is and press fire when on the virus (this can be tricky). It's very cheesy and the sound effects annoying, but this all adds to a tense, rushed effect. What I mean by rushed is every thing is timed in a net battle, putting a chip in, targeting the virus's. Once I expectedly died, it took forever to revive Megaman. It took about 30 minutes of shaking to get his energy bar to 6, that is, out of 10! And I read in the directions that it takes longer the more advanced Megaman is. So, if you're looking for a video game, this aint for you. But if you have the patience and the time, this toy can be fun. I would wait until the Progress PET or the PET 2 comes out. They are this only much more advanced! So, in the end I'm not dissing this toy, or saying it's totally awsome, it's all a matter of opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, November 22, 2004

This toy is great! U can use battlechips! Just like the show! Here are some places that u can get some chips:

With The Figures
With The Pet (duh)
www.flashmanexe.com
www.toywiz.com

And u can modify chips! (thanks to www.pet-world.de.vu) What i
mean is that you can make any chip that you want! And the number on each chip is the number one the chip. Say u want to collect all 300 chips, you would go by that number! Email me at hamtaro@mindless.com if you have any other questions. =P
