Book Description

Ms. Ahearn donates all book proceeds to Parents For Megan's Law, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of childhood sexual abuse.

Ms. Ahearn provides an historical overview of Megan's Law and sex offender registration and notification laws in the United States and gives communities specific answers on how to deal with and effectively manage notifications. She also provides information on who to contact in each state to access details on registered sex offenders.

Megan's Law can make us aware only of sex offenders who have been caught and convicted and because this represents only a small portion of the actual number of sexual predators out there, Ms. Ahearn gives parents and caregivers real prevention answers in the The Apple Of My Eye Childhood Sexual Abuse Prevention Program.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Eye Opening Read!, November 10, 2001

This review is from: Megan's Law Nationwide and ... The Apple Of My Eye Childhood Sexual Abuse Prevention Program (Paperback)
Megan's Law Nationwide and The Apple of My Eye Sexual Abuse Prevention Program not only tells you all you need to know about Megan's Law; it also does a great job in educating you about childhood sexual abuse, the different types of predators, and what you can do to minimize the chances of your children falling victim to one of these predators.

Before reading this book, I was under the impression that I would be notified by the police if a sex offender moved into my neighborhood. I was shocked to find out that in my state, this is not so! Apparently, each state has the discretion to decide whether or not law enforcement is REQUIRED or NOT to inform the public. The book also does a nice job in outlining how schools can play a role in the notification process.

The childhood sexual abuse prevention portion of this book is a part that every parent should read. I had no idea of the different types of predators. I also did not realize how manipulative some of these people are, and how they try to gain your trust only to take advantage of your child. The tricks, red flags, and rules of safety are all great and should be read by all.

Lastly, the referrals given in the book are very handy. I used one to learn that my state did not require notifications. My advice is that, if you have children, or take care of children, you should read this book. You will learn a lot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ahern not an expert, August 7, 2009
This review is from: Megan's Law Nationwide and ... The Apple Of My Eye Childhood Sexual Abuse Prevention Program (Paperback)
This book teaches a few useful tips you can find anywhere, but Ahern is very biased, gives faulty statistics, and misleads us by her writing. The result is the promotion of fear, which overrides any good that could be obtained from this book. As the book is a supporter of Megan's Law, it does not discuss the dangers of misusing the registry info, nor on its inaccuracies. Ahern is far from an expert in the subject, coming off as a marketing executive rather than an expert in sexual abuse.
