Editorial Reviews

Review

''The world would look at Megan Cope and her brief little life and see limitations. Imperfections. Inabilities. Her dad, just like her heavenly Father, saw something else entirely. Joy. Big heart. Love. Wisdom. Raising a disabled daughter, and then saying goodbye after a brief ten years of life, Mike knows the struggles, triumphs, pain, everyday miracles . . . and the secrets. Secrets God shares with those who care for the least among us. In Megan's Secrets, my friend Mike shares the wisdom he learned from loving Megan.'' --Max Lucado

''Mike Cope's newest book is a stunning memoir, a convincing theodicy, and spiritual therapy all rolled into one beautiful story. For those who have grieved a loss or doubted God's goodness in a time of dereliction, or wondered if there can be healing after a great loss, this book is essential reading. This is a book for broken hearts.'' --Darryl Tippens, author of Pilgrim Heart: The Way of Jesus in Everyday Life

''The stories Mike tells and the secrets he shares from one of Christ s little ones will not only amaze you, they will change your life.'' --Greg Taylor, editor, New Wineskins magazine

About the Author

In 1994, Mike Cope and his wife Diane's lives were jolted by the death of their ten-year-old daughter, Megan. Though she was mentally disabled from birth, she had been a strong, joy-filled child who'd taught them much about what ultimately matters in life. When she died, their odyssey of loss and joy-amid-grief sharpened Mike's already intense interest in life's biggest questions. An author of four books, a blogger (four million visits in the past several years), a minister, and an editor of two magazines, Mike has for many years spoken to large audiences around the country about what really matters, and is currently teaching a class of three hundred university students each semester at a local university. Mike and Diane live in Abilene, Texas, and have been married thirty-one years. They have two surviving children: Matt, a resident in internal medicine at Duke University, and Chris, a junior in high school.

_Megan's Secrets_ is a deeply moving book, one of those rare works that manages to be both heart-wrenchingly sad and spectacularly joyous. Cope is not afraid to ask the hard questions: why do children suffer? How can a Christian face such personal pain and still cling to faith? And he avoids the easy, platitudinous answers, valuing instead the mystery, pain and joy of the Christian walk through the valley of the shadow of death. This book will speak not only to those who have faced the hardship of having a special needs child or the loss of a child. Anyone who is searching for meaning and richness in life will love this book.

Megan's Secrets is a love story, but it's no ordinary love story. In this book of secrets we find the heart of God himself displayed in the life of one of "the least of these." "Marching" through life with Megan gives us eyes to see more clearly the reality of God's love and care for each one of us and for this world he created. As I read Mike's beautiful and touching stories and the inspiring insights he provides, I found that I not only loved Megan more, but as I pondered her life secrets, I found that I grew to love God more. Maybe that is one reason Jesus calls Megan and those like her the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

In this book of secrets we find the heart of God himself displayed in the life of one of "the least of these." "Marching" through life with Megan gives us eyes to see more clearly the reality of God's love and care for each one of us and for this world he created. We feel, or at least I did, the sorrow that this family must have felt - their suffering and yet their joy and the blessing that as bestowed on them in Megan. What a reminder this book is that perhaps we should spend more time seeing others as God sees them - searching for the blessing within that each individual offers to us in our interactions.

Not for the faint of heart - I went through quite a few tissues with this book. But what an amazing read - what wonderful lessons he shares with us. Without a doubt, anyone who has ever experienced a loss, anyone who has ever suffered, loved and lost ...You must read this book. You must hear the secrets of Megan for they are priceless gems.

We are a society that obsesses over physical appearance and care very little for the inner man - only about the exterior. 'Megan's Secrets' shows that sometimes the people we are ready to write off are the ones that can teach us the most. That sometimes the older you get, the more vain we are about the people around us. And that sometimes the wisest and most insightful people are the little children, who only care about a person's heart and they are not superficial.

Most people, when they see a handicapped child, pity the parents for having to deal with the child. But I think that Mike would say that we are the ones who should be pitied, for not knowing the unconditional love and the great joy that a child like that can bring.

Megan was only ten years old when she died, but she lived her short life to the fullest that she could. She slept for only 2-4 hours a night, as if she knew that she would only have a short time here on earth and wanted to do the most she could.

"Painful as it is, grief is a gift - a part of the healing process." (pg. 145)

I feel that this quote summarizes a large part of the point of the story. A father grieved the loss of a daughter and in some ways is still grieving - as I am sure every parent is who ever lost a child.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, however there were parts that I found to be a stretch and a bit over-the-top. It is for this reason that I didn't give 'Megan's Secrets' 5 stars. This was a moving story and while it touched my heart, I don't plan to reread it any time soon. I would recommend this book, but probably only to those who are in a similar situation.

I received a complimentary copy of this book to review. I was not required to give a positive review, but only to give my honest opinion - which I have done.

A Father's Story of Lessons he Learned from his Handicapped Daughter About Life

Megan is a beautiful heartwarming story of how this mentally disabled child touched the lives of those around her. Father, editor, author, and pastor, Mike Cope shares experiences from the short ten years of Megan's life. Photos of Megan at the beginning of each of the four parts of the book help the reader understand why she had such an impact on those who knew her.
In addition to the anecdotes and stories from Meagan's life are stories of other young heroes faced with similar challenges. Cope used their circumstances to introduce lessons from the scriptures, Biblical characters faced with disappointments and decisions chose to claim the promises of God and follow His leading in their lives.

Cope quoted from the writings of several well-known authors, who also have experienced or written on the pain of grief and loss, including: Henri Nouwen, John Claypool, Philip Yancey, Frederick, and many others.

Cope shares his insights into the reality of the death of child this way, "Here's a little-known fact that many who have lost a child can testify to: life starts to make sense again shortly after the funeral...just before it falls apart and makes no sense at all. You realize that your life is going to continue, but your child will not be there. Ever."

I felt the emotions of pain, the grief of loss, as the tears came, as I sobbed bitterly throughout the pages of Megan's story and the poignant stories of others who experienced similar losses. I also laughed deeply as Mike related Megan's antics and how her joy and acceptance became contagious.

The comprehensive chapter notes and credits offer choice material for future reading.
