"[Foster] drew me into this amazing tale easily, with masterful yet not overly complex language that flows beautifully into a story one will remember always...Though clearly creatures of fiction, the characters inMegan's Wayare wonderfully three-dimensional, brought vividly to life by Foster's careful details, from their unique back stories to the idiosyncrasies that make each person believable and real. To put it succinctly, Foster knows her stuff. Whether conveying Megan's soulful struggle over continuing her treatment, or delving into the fears of a teenager forced to deal with situations beyond her tender years, Foster does so skillfully and poignantly." --Barnestable Patriot

"...a vivid portrayal of each character's journey through life; of the joys and travails of putting one's heart on the line and making oneself vulnerable through the act of giving the heart."
When Megan Taylor, a single mother and artist, receives the shocking news that her cancer has returned, she'll be faced with the most difficult decision she's ever had to make. She'll endure an emotional journey, questioning her own moral and ethical values, and the decisions she'd made long ago. The love she has for her daughter, Olivia, and her closest friends, will be stretched and frayed.
Meanwhile, fourteen-year-old Olivia's world is falling apart right before her eyes, and there's nothing she can do about it. She finds herself acting in ways she cannot even begin to understand. When her internal struggles turn to dangerous behavior, her life will hang in the balance.
Megan's closest friends are caught in a tangled web of deceit. Each must figure out how, and if, they can expose their secrets, or forever be haunted by their pasts.

From the Author
Megan's Way was inspired by a true - and very personal - event that took place many years ago. My mother had undergone surgery for what I was told, at the time, was a benign condition. Years later, she revealed to me that there had been an oncologist in the operating room - the doctors had thought she had cancer. She also confessed that had they found cancer, she would not have sought treatment. Upon hearing this, I instantly reverted into a little girl again, What? How could you leave me?! The emotional impact of that event, and what that loss would have meant to both of us, festered for years - until Megan's Way was born.

Hello everyone! I grew up in Maryland with my mother, a slew of wonderful brothers, and friends. I am passionate about writing, reading, living healthy, and helping others do the same, and enjoy just about anything outdoors (and anything chocolate!). I never try to think what a new book may be about before I pick it up to read. From the front cover I knew it must be spiritual, but I just wasn't prepared for the tears... Actually, I don't think you can prepare for crying but I used to try sometime...I wouldn't watch movies that I thought would bring tears...wouldn't attend public events where I might cry... To me, tears were indicative of my period of job burnout--a time when my body and mind had just had experienced so much that all I could do was cry. That's been years ago though I still cry easily but today's tear are normally those of joy. Quite a different set of feelings...
In Melissa Foster's book, I found the joy and cleansing of tears... How beautiful!
Megan was dying. Her cancer had moved into her bones and there was nothing that could be done. The doctor had given her a variety of pills that would help reduce pain and prolong life, but death was still soon...
The only concern Megan had was for her daughter, Olivia. She had already made arrangements for her to be adopted by her best friends Holly and Jack. They, together with Peter, had been friends of Megan since long before she had a daughter. In many ways, they were much closer than family and loved and depended upon each other so much. It was natural that Megan had turned to them to ensure Olivia would be cared for.
But there were other reasons why Megan turned to Holly and Jack. Secrets that she had never shared with anybody.
The problem was that all three of her friends also had secrets that could now come to the surface in ways that could affect the rest of their lives...... Holly, Jack and Peter were not only losing their beloved friend, they could potentially lose even more!
Megan was a single Mom. She had tossed out possibilities of who might have been the father, but had never shared it. Often, because of her illness, she would realize a need to explain the relationship with her daughter, so finally she wrote a letter explaining everything and hid it away. In the meantime, she had decided to stop taking her pills. It had been so bad, so hard for Olivia when she had first been diagnosed and treated, now, with no hope, she just wanted to save Olivia from the pain and anger which could extend for months and months...
Not a unique drama. This story plays itself over and over across the world and will continue to do so. It is the people, the characters involved in such a drama that makes just another story something that is more--more beautiful, more real, more naturally realistic. Foster has created a set of characters that we all must come to know. Becoming a Finalist in the Indie Book Awards is not a surprise. There is no way this book would not be separated out as special, fulfilling a need in all of us to know more about death and dying...and how we may find our own way to accept and overcome it! Foster takes us into the potential supernatural aspect of an individual's own will and then permitted fate to appear beyond that...allowing the Holy One of their Ritual to smooth out the edges that remained...
A truly joyful book...A Real tearjerker, like I said! One I consider a must-read for teens on up!
This book was given to me via the author for a honest and fair review, and part of her summer tour promoting the book which will be made into a movie. We open up learning something about Olivia and Megan. Megan is suffering from Cancer and knows her time is running out. She tries to deal with it best she can not always sure she is making the right choice. She starts out trying to distance herself from her daughter knowing that it would make it easier when she was no longer around. Olivia hates this idea, she was so close to her mother before the Cancer struck her why is her mother pushing her out now? Megan holds deep secrets that impact her friends and family, and keeps them hidden away until she is no longer around to answer the heated questions.
Oh my gosh what a great book, with everyone holding secrets of their own. Holly hiding a deep secret from both Megan and Jack. Jack and Megan with their secret from Holly. Megan with her own secret from everyone including her daughter until it was too late. Even Olivia has her own secret. I love how they each tried to honor Megan in their own way. Definitely a book I would recommend to anyone looking for a great in depth book of mother and daughter and close friends.
Because of my work, much of the reading I do is non-fiction but every now and then I treat myself to a novel. I can honestly say that Megan's Way is such a good read that I couldn't put the book down! Melissa Foster's characters are so real and the drama of Megan's story actually left me breathless at times.
Feelings, secrets, strong bonds, and supernatural elements are intertwined in this beautifully written novel by Melissa Foster. When Megan discovers that she is sick, she has to face a very difficult decision, mainly concerning her daughter, Olivia. Megan deals with the burden of being keeping secrets from the people she most love. What she is unaware of is that everybody around her are keeping secrets, secrets concerning all of them, secrets that can make their worlds shake. Wonderful account of the relationships among a group of friends, and a wonderful reflection about the meaning of being family and of loving and sharing love with others. Powerful story about the power of love and about the ways people develop to deal with the pain of losing loved ones. The pace of the novel is quite adequate, since it lets the reader know new information little by little, giving you space for trying to guess, although the twists are so unexpected that it is difficult to guess what is going to happen next. The building of suspense is so good that the story keeps you hooked almost from the beginning. The characters are well depicted and seem quite real. Using a different register for Olivia, so she sounds like a real teenager. If I have to find a flaw to this enjoyable and emotional book is that sometimes I found some vocabulary a bit repetitive. We love synonyms!
As a cancer patient I actually found this book very inspiring even though it made me cry. Loved the style of writing and would definitely read another book by Melissa Foster!
I could not put this book down. It kept me in tears. It is an amazing story of friendship and motherhood. Being the mother of a twelve year old daughter it really hit home. I couldn't even begin to imagine leaving her. Megan's way really touched on that issue. Like I said it's a tear jerked.
