I am a physician. I was on lipitor for about 4 years until I found out it was giving me rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown). The manufacturers of statins state that this is a rare side effect and I even counselled my patients that this is about a 1/200 incidence. Well after delving into the research a bit more it turns out that pretty much everyone taking statins has some degree of muscle pathology on biopsy, with the majority being subclinical...but not insignificant. Being a work-out nut this could not be tolerated.

I stopped the Lipitor and went on a low fat diet (20% fat) with Mega Red. To be fair I am also taking a proprietary 3-6-9 omega oil blend as well (Udo's Blend) although it is not clear that this affects cholesterol levels and makes no claims to. I have been on the Mega Red for about 2 months and the low fat diet for about 2 weeks and got my levels rechecked. Total cholesterol went from 240 (pre-lipitor) to 179. LDL from 160 to 119 and HDL from 35 to 40. All as good or better than I got on 20 mg of Lipitor.

Now I no longer have to worry about muscle breakdown and my LFT's are normal for the first time in 4 years. As an added bonus I can get this locally for about $27 for a 4-month supply (with coupon and buy-1-get-1 deals) which is about 1/4 the cost of Lipitor. Well this is one anecdotal success story so take it for what it's worth. I have put a lot of energy into exercizing and going low fat as well so under those circumstances I can say that it seems to work for me andI am very happy with the results.

This is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading brands of krill oil: Nutrigold Krill Oil Gold (1000 mgs), Nutrigold Krill Oil Gold (500 mgs), Now Foods Neptune Krill Oil (1000 mgs), Now Foods Neptune Krill Oil (500 mgs), Schiff Mega Red Extra Strength Omega-3 Krill Oil, Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil, Viva Labs Krill Oil, Jarrow Formulas Neptune Krill Oil, Source Naturals NKO Neptune Krill Oil, and Source Naturals Arctic Pure Krill Oil, and a leading brand of omega-3 fish oil, Nutrigold Triple Strength Omega-3 Gold Fish Oil.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS: Omega-3 fatty acids are what make krill oil and fish oil so beneficial. There are three major components of omega-3 fatty acids in these products: EPA (which is good for your heart, circulatory system, lowering triglycerides, depression and mood orientation, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory for soothing joint pains), DHA (which is good for your mental acuity, or if you are pregnant, nursing an infant, or for children), and "other." Other omega-3s, like DPA and SDA, are types of fatty acids which are easily converted to EPA in the body. In most fish oils, the amount of these other fatty acids is low, but in highly concentrated oils, it can be a significant amount. The important components are EPA and DHA.

KRILL OIL VS FISH OIL: Krill oil is an omega-3 nutrient and is an alternative source of omega-3 than fish oil. Some folks prefer krill oil over fish oil because they believe it has increased bioavailability and better absorption than fish oil, and contains the additional nutrients, Astaxanthin and Phospholipids. In fact, this is correct. Krill oil has better bioavailability and absorption than fish oil and contains Astaxanthin and Phospholipids, neither of which are contained in fish oil.

Turns out the fish oil supplement I was taking gave me gout. Ouch! A personal trainer suggested switching to Krill oil. I have heard some people saying that they don't care for the vanilla flavoring of the capsules combined with a fishy taste. I can only detect a mild vanilla flavor and no fishy taste at all.

Yes, I am a believer, after3 weeks of using, mega red, I havn't had to put drops in my sore eyes for a week now! Truly amazing, since doc has tried everything including tear duct plugs to help relieve my dry eyes. Now, I hope my next doc appt will show good results for my cholesterol, I stopped taking my statins and I am hoping!
I added this later on after my above review...., after 3 weeks on krill oil I had skin cancer surgery, then plastic surgery to close it on my face. I started bleeding uncontrollably, what a disaster. I had no idea that you MUST STOP taking krill oil before surgery for at least 3 weeks. No one at the hospital knew anything about krill oil, I told them that I was taking it prior to surgery. What a terrible experience!!! Be very careful!!! It is a very powerful blood thinner and effects clotting.

My doctor had me try these since they have no fishy after taste. I can say they helped raise my good cholesterol within months but can't vouch for if they reduced the bad cholesterol since I wasn't that strict with my diet during that time period. But this was the first test that my good cholesterol was good since I have started having a problem.

Incredible. Really. I suffer greatly from arthritis and inflammation to the point that I have often thought it better to be dead. After just one week of taking Mega Red, my pain has decreased by 65%. To all who suffer from arthritis and are reading this review, know that you have hope with this product.
