I am an extremely experienced pilot in real planes (Instrument-rated, complex, high-performance, etc.) and remote control aircraft and other rc devices. I, and another experienced pilot, were unable to get this piece of garbage to fly. It is terribly underpowered and the claimed 5-minute "flight" time is false; first, it doesn't fly, and second, you'd only have about two minutes of flight if it did. The kids for which it was bought were vastly disappointed, and you will be also. If Amazon.com allowed a "negative" score, I'd rate this piece of garbage as below zero. I do guarantee, though, that it'll be a huge...and expensive...disappointment.

Too Difficult to Fly with Crashing and Breaking,

The MegaTech Hyrdo-Fly 2 has a bang-bang rudder control. In other words, the rudder is either hard left, straight ahead, or hard right with no proportional steering. The elevator is similar with either level pitch or hard up pitch with no proportional control The throttle has 3 forward speeds, slow, medium, fast. The battery is a NiMH 350mAh 2/3AAA with 8 cells connected in series. First, the battery is too small. I measured the power draw at full throttle on a fresh charge at 10.0A and 7.1V. In other words, you only get about 2 minutes of full throttle run time, with a 30 minute re-charge time. Second, the vehicle only flies at full throttle. Third, the vehicle only skims across the ground at full throttle. Consequently, the slower 2 speeds are worthless. Fourth, when flying it is too easy put the aircraft into a steep bank without hope of recovery before crashing into the ground. Fifth, the vehicle usually bounces onto its back and breaks the propeller, cracks the motor mount strap, brakes off the underside water rudder, and cracks the nose. The kit comes with 4 spare propellers, but you have a 50% chance breaking a propeller every time you fly. I did change the connector to a Deans Ultra-Plug, so I could use my DualSky Lithium Polymer 730mAh, 7.4V, 20C batteries. This increases the run time to about 5 minutes but does not improve any other performance parameters. If you would like a Land-Sea-Air vehicle like this one, I would recommend the Storm Launcher Flying Hydroplane 1st, the the XPV 2.0 Shadow Hawk 2nd.

In their manual Megatech states "Do Not Return This Product To The Store", saying if you have problems you should call customer service.
Sadly, they have no customer service... support is only available (now) via email, they'll get back to you in 24-48 hours. And, if the product was broken out of the box... when then you get to pay to ship it back to them AND pay return shipping AND you're without the Hyro-fly you paid good money for until they get around to sending you a replacement that may or may not work. Avoid Megatech... these guys suck!

It was very disappointing, my son received this as a christmas present, we went out to fly it and the wing broke on the first landing and a part that holds the propeller flew off, never to be found. This was definitely not worth the money.

This is the second plane purchased for my husband as a gift. He is a business man who has everything practical and most everything imaginable. I thought (twice) that this would be a great stress reliever toy. Just as the first product that I gave him for Christmas, he was excited immediately. He read the instructions, set the toy up properly, and being his usual cautious self, took it to an open piece of pasture land that we own, so the trees would be no threat. The first time the plane came down, the nose cracked and the hood came completely off. The kit does come with glue, but come on...this was first flight. He was very disappointed, as was I since this was his only birthday present. |
