3.0 out of 5 stars Nice plane, if it works!
I bought this plane from a seller on eBay. It was brand new. The range of the radio turned out to be very short, less than 25 ft. I called the Megatech technical service for help. I was told that as I bought it on eBay, the warranty was void. This is the first time I ever heard of such a policy. I decided to try to fix the problem myself. I found that the antenna...

crashed first few times due to too hard throws. a simple toss and throttle to fly. got good and pssssst guess what? YOU CAN FLY INSIDE at work in confernce room - do not hand to boss you will never get it back. take children outside to big park and it babysits for HOURS and bring lots of AA batteries. I use the rechargeable ones from RAYOVAC. rubber nose cone is secret to durability and if you see a crash coming turn off power to keep from breaking propellers. THE Christmas gift with class! was so fun to fly bought another one. ENJOY

5.0 out of 5 stars Great RC plane for anywhere fun....., November 26, 2003

After 6 years in the hobby and 7 gas powered RC planes, I finally got my first electric plane!!!The X-EC is based on the principle of variable thrust vectoring, where one motor slows down to yaw the plane in the direction of the slowed motor. Throttle gives it thrust which in turn causes lift - acting as a proxy elevator. It has no control surfaces as conventional planes, so banks and pitches are more sluggish. One needs to plan a turn/rise more in advance. Also, the controls are not proportional....and you have either full or nil throttle/rudder.
I took it to our field with my glow plane, doubting if this thing would ever fly. Total weight with the battery pack came to about 54 Gms.
The day was ideal for light weight electrics. There was a very slight breeze(the manufacturer says upto 5MPH.....but that would be like flying it through a typhoon. If you can see a leaf on a tree move, chances are that it wont fly). I charged one of the two stock packs (3.6V 120 mah) and hand launched the plane with the throttle/climb switch pressed. The plane just continued out of my hand into a steady climb. It flew so gently that I could actually run and catch up. Very slight corrections were necessary to keep it flying on course. When it got to about 40 feet, I hit the left turn button. It gently banked left but began to lose altitude. I released the left turn button and it continued to climb again and now flying at a 90 deg left of its take off path. I had figured out how to take circuits!!!!!
After about 2 circuits(at an avg height of about 30') I decided to land. I released the throttle switch and it began to decend rather quickly with a nose down attitude. I had no elevator control. So the next best thing was to give it power, and I did. It recovered and got to level flight again. I released the power switch again and it began to decend. At about 1 feet off the ground I added power again and it flared beautifully and landed gently. I couldn't stop smiling. It was my first electric flight and I enjoyed every second of it.
The reason I have given it 4 stars for durability is that although it is foam and very fragile, it is very repairable. I have had many bad landings and even 'Tree top' landings and broke the stab and cracked the wing once when flying it on a windy day. Just a bit of foam glue and some transparent tape got it flying as before. I don't think it is of much educational value as there is no bulding required(it flies out of the box) and does not follow all the dynamics of conventional aircraft either.

This is not gonna be my last electric plane for sure. ... it is an awesome deal. The only RC plane I've seen that you could pack in your briefcase and take and fly anywhere. It can do no aerobatics but does slow and gentle circuits really well. Learning to fly with this is simple, but still no piece of cake. Throttle management is the key in the X-EC to get good flghts and landings. Just letting the plane glide back to land is not the best idea. One needs to give short bursts of power to keep the nose level and grease into the ground.Good throttle management gives 5 minute flights with stock packs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice plane, if it works!, October 20, 2003

I bought this plane from a seller on eBay. It was brand new. The range of the radio turned out to be very short, less than 25 ft. I called the Megatech technical service for help. I was told that as I bought it on eBay, the warranty was void. This is the first time I ever heard of such a policy. I decided to try to fix the problem myself. I found that the antenna connection in the transmitter was poorly designed and fabricated. I soldered a thick cable connecting the RF output on the PCB and the base of the antenna. I also added an extra 13 inch of aerial cable to the existing aerial on the plane. The range increased dramatically. I was able to fly it in winds up to 10 mph. The performance is impressive, but it seems like there are problems with production quality, and the customer service is less than desirable. I would not recommend this plane without reservations. If you are looking for a good beginners R/C plane, I suggest you should consider the HobbyZone's Firebird line of planes. I hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up, Up and Away!, December 31, 2002

Well, I just had a chance to fly my new Diversion plane today (sorry I am 42, not a 10 year old :-) and boy did I have fun! I am not an airplace R/C experienced pilot so I think I started correctly with this plane. As a previous review stated, read the directions first. The plane is more of a powered glider, but it is a blast to fly and easy to use. I went to a large grassy field and my rough landings did not damage the plane at all in 6 inch grass. Have fun with this one! MAS

After 3 replacements from Megatech, I got an X-EC Diversion that flew. The first 2 had engine RPM differences, causing incorrect flight. So, now I'm happy. This thing flys great! The wing is fragile, make sure not to nose dive it into the ground or the engines will break off the wing. But, for a $89 plane, this is fun!

It crashes a lot. It breaks a lot. Replacement parts are way too expensive. Megatech needs to offer a bag of 100 props for ten bucks and replacement wings for a few bucks each. If they don't, the plane is a worthless toy for most boys because...it crashes a lot...it breaks a lot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous and not for kids, July 18, 2003

I never made it to make that thing fly: When charging the battery, it started to smoke and almost exploded. I read the manual again, and it says: dont overcharge the battery, charge it for 3-4 minutes until it gets warm but not too hot.
So this means in other words: if you or your kid is forgetting to take it away in time, the whole thing might burn, blow up or just as in my case end up in smoke. Since I am a non smoker, I sent it back and will now buy a plane that is safe.
