PreSchool-Grade 2-Meg is disappointed that she hasn't found friends at her new school or at her new neighborhood playground. She'd like to play with Tina, but Tina always seems to be surrounded by lots of other children. Meg's mother reminds her that they've lived in their new home only a week and encourages her to wish on a shooting star, but the night is too cloudy for stars. The next night, Meg's father takes her out into the country, where they enjoy sitting by a fire and gazing at a night sky filled with everything but shooting stars. Finally, Meg dreams of a shooting star, makes her wish, and finds Tina alone and eager to join her at the playground the next morning. Soft pencil-and-watercolor illustrations in muted colors, most of them double-page spreads, convey just the right gentle mood to complement this comforting story of a shy girl's patient quest for a friend. The large format lends itself well to use in a storyhour or with a class, but the book's quiet tone makes it best suited for sharing with an individual child.
