Detailing clay is a great invention, isn't it? What a time saver! BUT, what clay should you be using?

There are so many... AND they all make wild claims. So, here's the truth.

Use the mildest clay you can to get the job done. Period. Detailing clay is an ABRASIVE tool that's made safe through the use of lubrication. So, learn to use the tool properly to avoid problems.

Meguiar's Smooth Surface clay is the least abrasive of all national brands. It is often criticized for being too mild.

The reality is... If you keep your car's paint in good condition, this is the best grade of clay to use. If you have not kept your paint in good condition, then use the Mothers product. If you have downright neglected your car's paint, use the Turtle Wax ICE Clay product and follow with the ICE Liquid Clay (polish) in the kit.

BUT... Here's what you need to know about the Meguiar's Smooth Surface Clay refill product. It's NOT the best VALUE!

For the very best value, look at Meguiar's C-2000 Professional Detailing Clay (Mild). For just a couple dollars more you get a full 8 oz. clay bar (that a bit more than 200 grams) and a nice storage jar.

For you detailing aficionados out there... the C-2000 (Amazon ASIN: B0002NYE5W) is the ultimate clay bar. It's very mild, easy to reshape, does not fall apart, not too sticky... It's a nice bar.

To Meguiar's: Thanks for bellying up to the bar with the Smooth Surface Clay refill product, but you need to fix the pricing. Thanks!

Meguiar's typically makes good products at a good price, so if you are a fan, go ahead and give it a try. I find most car care "aficionados" just have to try different products to see what works best for them.

I have used two of these meguiar's clay bars, and they are just so-so. The packaging is very nice and I like that the clay comes in small packages instead of one big lump like most manufacturers.

To compare, I have used the turtle way ice clay bar kit and the mother's clay bar kit. I usually save the detailer spray that comes with the kits, and just use soapy water in a spray bottle for the clay lubricant. I actually like the turtle wax clay the best of the three, but it is packaged with a lame "liquid clay" cleaner. I think the mother's clay is also nicer than the meguiar's. The meguiar's clay, seemed like a milder clay than the others I have tried.

I have also heard good things about clay magic. I think I will try that next and hopefully remember to add it to my review.

I use this clay on cars that have been well maintained...not on cars that require a little more TLC. I have more aggressive clay for those cars.

This mild clay works well and easy to kneed. Be sure cut the clay into thirds to make it easy to work with on the car and to make the bar last longer.

This product is excellent for removing those little paint imperfections. It is easy to use and does not scratch the paint surface.

I have used this product on 20 or more cars and it always leaves the finish smooth as glass. Most all of the people say the car looks like it did when they bought it. I highly recommend this product.
