I have tried many car shampoos including Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash, NXT Car Wash, and some from the professional Mirror Glaze Line of Meguiar's washes such as Hi Tech Wash.

Among those products, Gold Class was always my favorite for its solid cleaning ability, but also its ability to leave a final shine and maintain the previous layer of wax on the car.

I purchased Ultimate Wash and Wax and got my two wash buckets with Grit Guards ready!

I used a fair amount of the product to ensure I had plenty of suds and so that I would be sure to receive any of the wax/protection benefits if indeed they existed.

The smell of Ultimate Wash and Wax is lovely. Furthermore, it looks unlike any wash product I have ever used. It is rather opaque and thick, so there must be something special and different about the product as Meguiar's suggests.

The cleaning ability was solid, if only the slightest bit weaker than Gold Class. The suds were great, and it was a pleasure working with the pleasant smelling product.

I dried the car thoroughly. The result? The car was clean and had a subdued sparkle to it. However, the paint was not very slick and there was not much shine. Certainly, even using a Quick Detailer leaves more shine afterwards than Ultimate Wash and Wax. Therefore, I felt the need to follow up Ultimate Wash and Wax with Ultimate Quick Wax. This restored the shine and slickness to my vehicle, but also questions the legitimacy of using a wash with theoretical protection benefits, if you still need to follow with a wax product.

In conclusion, Ultimate Wash & Wax is another fine product from Meguiar's. It's a pleasure to use and wash your vehicle with, and there are no significant negatives to using the product.

This is an update to my original review in June 2010, which was very positive.

This IS a nice product, producing copious suds that last, good at cleaning the vehicle. So, nothing new there.

However, I always wondered about the claims of the wash containing carnauba and polymers. Since one normally has to buff waxes off the car, just HOW did this product leave these wax type finishes on a car? Why wouldn't you have to buff this after using it?

Then it occurred to me. My black car always has a good wax finish - do I NEED to be putting something from a wash in addition to that? When I wash a car, I hose it down, mix up the sudsy shampoo, wash all areas, squeegie off the water with a silicon blade and finish up by wiping up any remaining droplets/moisture with one of those damp, ChamWow type, high absorbancy felt towels. This worked fine, BUT, with the Meguiar's, I always had to follow up on the glass with an additional buffing from a bath type towel. If I didn't buff the windows, even though they had been wiped clean of droplets by the ChamWow, they would be very streaked/spotted in the direct sunlight. So, although I didn't see direct streaking of the paint, I have to assume that it had the same issue as the unbuffed windows, given I wasn't buffing the car paint itself.

I actually had gone to buy a new bottle of the Meguiar's. Hadn't paid much attention to prices, in that I always want a good shampoo. But then I noticed that this product is twice the price of other name brand shampoos such as Black Magic and Rain-X. PLUS, this product calls for 1 oz per GALLON, whereas those others call for 1 oz per BUCKET. So, it's actually FOUR times the price of the others.

So, came back with the Black Magic, which is just a cleaning shampoo.

Despite already knowing that washing and waxing go together about as good as trying to stick equal ends of a magnet together, I decided to purchase this to give it a shot. 1st, am a huge Meguiars loyalist and I tend to use their professional line up of products due to experience and owning my own automotive detailing business. 2nd: being in the business of detailing vehicles I've grown accustomed to utilizing the appropriate steps thorought the detail process. I purchased this for my own vehicle for a trial and error run. One thing that I will say about the product that is positive is if you are tight on time and waxing is not a choice, I would recommend this product for you as something is better than nothing. However, keep in mind that it will not produce the quality of protection or shine that a hand or machine applied proper wax would. This is due to 2 reasons: 1: you are waxing while washing, the coverage is not as thorough, it's essentially as if you'd wax before washing. It's going up break down because it's diluted. Secondly, a major advantage of a paste or liquid wax is the application of the product itself. You will find much better coverage and masking of paint defects when the right steps are taken. Meaning more shine. I'm not tryin to deter anyone away from trying this product nor disagreeing with the positive votes. Just giving some useful feedback about the truth behind the product other than basing my rating off of the fact that it smells good.

I've used Meguiars gold class products for years, and gave this a shot to see if there was any real difference between this and others. While you can't expect this to replace a proper wax job, it will leave darker cars with a high level of clarity and gloss. It smells like a birthday cake and suds up very nicely. Stays very lubricated during application and rinses off easily. On dark or black cars, the suds staying wet is an important aspect to prevent swirling and surface scratches. Ideally you want the dirt suspended in the water and suds layer during application so the crud rinses away cleanly. If the suds collapse early it is more dangerous for the finish.

The only drawback for this and other Meguiars products is the cheap foil seal applied to the lid at the factory. This makes a lot of their washes leak from the lid as you leave the store before you ever open it. I recommend transferring all their soaps to a mouthwash bottle or other container with a secure lid. Pressure washing my trunk mat and spare tire well twice was a hard learned lesson.
