Classic Kebekois Rock!,

This review is from: Meilleur De Beau Dommage (Audio CD)
During the seventies, popular music in Quebec proved a veritable breeding ground for superb singer-songwriters and groups - all of whom were greatly influenced by sixties Brit-pop and American r&b. Think only of Michel Pagliaro's Beatlesque "Lovin' You Ain't Easy" f'rinstance. Beau Dommage, a multi-talented group whose main songwriters (Michel Rivard and Pierre Bertrand) now enjoy revered solo songwriting careers, released a series of wonderfully eclectic pop-rock albums that proved hits in their native province and in France. MEILLEUR is a great anthology of their finest stuff. From the smooth acoustic slide guitar of "Le Blues d'la Metropole" to the fifties doo-wop tribute "Ginette" to the Genesis-like instrumentation of "Le Geant Beaupre", it's all recommended, no matter what command of the language (French) you have. Along with Harmonium, Beau Dommage IS Quebecois rock.

Being born in Quebec in the late 70's I grew up listening to this music...until i moved to the States in grade school...on a lark i decided to look it up and was really happy to find it here in the US. Fans of folk pop will enjoy the flawless harmonies and catchy hooks, but really the best part is the slice-of-life glimpse into the modern Quebecois experience...something that can only be experienced if you know the language. They sing in heavy Quebecois dialect, so french students may have a bit of trouble following the lyrics...which is really too bad, this album is worth getting to know.
