This review is from: Mel Bay DADGAD Tuning (Book/CD) (Paperback)
Julie Henigan's book is an excellent introduction to DADGAD arrangements. It is a well-chosen collection of interesting songs in both tablature and standard notation. The accompanying CD is a delight to listen to by itself!
The publisher states that these songs are "accessible to musicians with at least an intermediate knowledge of guitar technique," but I think an advanced beginner can play a few of them with relative ease. I've been playing for around 18 months and only recently began dabbling in DADGAD tuning, but I was able to play "Bill Sullivan's Polka" and "O, The Britches Full of Stiches" within of week of receiving the book. The other arrangements do seem to get progressively more complex, so intermediate to advanced players will also enjoy it. The only negative (and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5) is that the techniques taught at the front of the book do not have accompanying tracks on the CD. Not everyone is familiar with the more complex ornamentation found in Irish music, and having supporting tracks to go with the text would have been helpful. |
