Book Description

July 23, 1999
Frederic Chopin was one of the most original and influential composers in history. Although he only lived 39 years, he wrote music that has thoroughly embedded itself in our culture. His melodies are often instantly familiar to us and show a profound lyric sense. Many qualities of Chopin's music are ideal for guitar transcription. He wrote pieces that are short with a manageable range. The textures are mostly single melody lines with harmonic accompaniment without the complex counterpoint that can be so difficult on the guitar. His music is often soft, intimate, subtle, and full of naunces of articulation, dynamics, and phrasing. These qualities transfer quite naturally to the guitar. While remaining as faithful as possible to the composer's musical intentions, these pieces experienced some modification that is noted in the provided performance notes. Intermediate in difficulty, this book assumes the player has basic knowledge of the guitar and familiarity with either standard music notation or guitar tablature. Selections include: Prelude Op. 28, No. 7; Prelude Op. 28, No. 20; Prelude Op. 28, No. 4; Cantabile; Mazurka Op. 6, No. 2; Prelude Op. 28, No , 15; Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2; Nocturne Op. 15, No. 3; Nocturne Op. 37, No 1; and Nocturne Op. 55, No. 1. All of these beautiful pieces are included on the companion CD.

About the Author

Richard Yates began learning the guitar in part through a Mel Bay beginner's book more than 30 years ago at about age twelve. He did not begin formal lessons until he was fifteen when he studied with Joseph Mayes and then Peter Collona at the Bryn Mawr Conservatory of Music in Pennsylvania. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Richard pursued graduate studies at the University of Oregon, and later completed a Master of Science degree at Western Oregon State College. He studied with John Doan at Willamette University for more than ten years. Richard has written a series of articles in the Guitar Foundation of America's magazine Soundboard titled "The Transcriber's Art." These articles are devoted exclusively to the issues and problems associated with the transcription of music for the guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Par excellence!, July 9, 2010
This review is from: Mel Bay's Chopin for Acoustic Guitar (Paperback)
This is the best book of it's kind. The works included in this collection constitute almost the greatest hits of Chopin. If you are a fan of Chopin and would like to play these unsurpassed piano melodies that have been transcribed for guitar, you should add this to your repertoire. Even if you're not quite the virtuoso yet the accompanying CD is well worth the cost of the book alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chopin my favorite composer, May 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mel Bay's Chopin for Acoustic Guitar (Paperback)
I couldn't wait for this book to arrive. Chopin is one of my favorite composers. I play accordion and piano and am just learning the classical guitar. Some songs are easy and some will take some time to learn. Thank heavens for tablature. I don't know the entire fretboard yet so tablature helps. The songs I've tried sound true to their melody. Even though this is labeled accoustic it can also be played on a classical guitar.
