About the Author

James Morton was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Having performed with several notable artists in the jazz and rock fields, he continues to perform in a variety of venues. He has written for Mel Bay Publications since 1980, and has over a dozen books to his credit. Through the years he has also contributed to Modern Drummer Magazine and other publications. He is currently working on a book about jazz drumming.

Do not fooled by the cover design.

This has plenty exercies of fills for 4 drum set not 5.

Pros: Plenty of fill exercies for single,double, triplet stroke fills with few paradiddles +
Cons: All exercies are based on 4 drums set

Book cover shows the 5 drum set but contents are only for 4 drum set (Hi Tom, Snare, Floor Tom, and Bass)
If you like to practice with mid tom (which is standard in current drum set - 5 drums), this is not for you.

If you can create/modify the contents to include mid tom, you may ... and if you can already can do it? why do you need this book? I bought and made changes in the book so i am not allowed to return it. I am going to change some contents and try to practice to create my own style on top of the contents of the book.

If you want to practice fills in 5 drum set while following the instructions, this is not for you. if you want to create your own 5 drum set fills, modify the contents(time consuming)to include mid tom and practice. if not you will limit your skills to only 4 drum set (This may cripple/limit your cordination when you want to play 5 drum set fills which includes mid tom: e.g. great coordination among hi-tom/snare/floor-tom but not with mid-tom)

For developing 5 drum set fills as beginner, this is not for you. This may be a good exercies book to create your own 5 drum set fills to practice.

I gave 2 out of 5 stars since i can make some use of it. The book is from 1980 for 4 drum set which may have been standard in that time.

No recommendation to newcomers to the drum world.
Try to find another book like this(collection of fills) with 5 drum set fills then i would give 5 stars ... I wish i can find one somewhere.

I am glad a student showed me this book. It is a great book I use with students so they learn fills and movement around the drums. There are tons of exercises, so this will be great for going in to the students' muscle memories!

I bought this book for my son who has been drumming for over 9 years. He thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has been very helpful for him and he continues to improve his drumming skills.
