Like many older Mel Bay books, this one is a little short on explanations. This book purports to teach "orchestrational style rhythm guitar". For those of you who don't know what that is (and the book doesn't explain it), it is essentially the "four to the bar" rhythm style that one would find in old big band charts or music theater shows. This style of guitar playing sounds best on acoustic archtop instruments. So be warned - the rhythm system contained in this book is very specialized. But that doesn't mean that one can't glean a lot of knowledge from this book. It is an excellent book for learning various chord voicings up the neck.

THE LAYOUT: For each class of chord (major, minor, dominant, 6th chords, altered dominant, etc.) you are given a set of chord diagrams and a few exercises and etudes to practice them with. No standard notation is used - just the diagrams and quarter note/slash style notation for the exercises. The inversion that is to be used is designated with the fret that it is to be played at, so one must really learn how to transpose the inversions around the neck. Many of the etudes are simple yet effective and practical as they use typical harmonic progressions that one would commonly find in this style.

THE PROS: This is definitely a left hand workout. Some of the switches are pretty tough and will really improve finger independence. Almost all of the chords have at least one muted string which increases the difficulty of accurate finger placement. The four to the bar right hand strumming will make your quarter note rhythm solid. And of course, there are lots of chords; many of them are very different than the types that one might be used to. So you will get to learn a bunch of chords and improve your fingers and ears while you're at it.

Such a simple and effective book for increasing chord vocabulary. Gives you some chords, has a few etudes, and then repeats this process while at the same time relating the new chords it presents to the older stuff you just learned. The book assumes you are not retarded, have a bit of motivation and takes off from there. Well worth the time of the intermediate guitar player to go through this bad boy a few times a year until the information is fully absorbed. This is also a great book for guitar teachers to use with their students.

If you want to take your playing to the next level, this is the book for you. Unlike most chord books I've bought, this one has etudes (exercises) to apply the chord forms as you learn them. Each level builds on the previous one as they progress through major, minor, dom 7th, minor 7th and so on. The DVD is very concise and the camera stays locked on the left hand where it belongs.
