4.0 out of 5 stars Time, Space and everything Haruhi Suzumiya, June 13, 2009
This review is from: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Vol. 3 (Paperback)
With the first two volumes of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya," the world and it's stakes were established to it's readers. With the realization that the world has been shaped and molded to the god-like whims of a girl named Haruhi Suzumiya (and that she just as easily has the power to destroy it), it is up to the members of the SOS Brigade to try and keep her pacified.

With volume 3, the creators of the series are able to pull beyond larger stories, and focus on smaller ones:

In "The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya," Haruhi signs up her brigade to enter a baseball tournament. Haruhi is adamant that they win, even the brigade only has 5 members, and most of them are not major sports players.

In "Knowing Me, Knowing You," Kyon thinks it's a dream come true when brigade member Mikuru Asahina asks him to meet her for a shopping trip on Sunday. Though they must be extra-cautious not to run into any other members who may be out and about...especially Haruhi Suzumiya.

In "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody," The SOS Brigade celebrates the holiday of Tanabata. After the celebration, Mikuru takes Kyon aside, and demonstrates her powers of time-travel: sending them 3 years into the past, where they encounter several familiar faces.

While the stories in the series are intriguing, the style in which the images and elements flow can get a bit choppy at times. In regards to the stories being turned into the anime series that came later, only "The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya" has made it to US shores. "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" was released in the last month in Japan for season 2 of the series, but "Knowing Me, Knowing You" has never been animated (but it could be a possibility someday). "Knowing Me, Knowing You" is a fun story, in that it provides several interesting scenarios...one of which shows us the often-enigmatic Yuki Nagato as we've probably never imagined.

If you've seen all the anime episodes I recommend buying this. The later part of this volume reveals a secret about the relationship between Kyon and Haruhi
