An Excellent Biography On One Of The Most Important and Most Ignored Reformers,

Do you want to know how good Clyde Leonard Manschreck's biography of Phillip Melanchthon is? Melanchton: The Quiet Reformer was written in 1958, the year before I was born. This paperback is released in 2009.Manshcreck's biography reads like a novel. It maintained my interest throughout. It deals with the controversies Melancthon dealt with and showed him as human but also that he was stronger in character than some believe. For example, he points out some say he was so much a humanist he was at odds with Luther while others say he was Luther's puppet. Manschreck stated it was none of the above. One thing that's interesting is that I consider evangelicalism to be a modern movement. However, Manschreck refers to the Reformation movement as evangelicals throughout the volume. I like reading biographies in hope of finding a kindred spirit, and I sometimes succeed. Melanchthon is an example. He has a heart for education not just of theology but the classics, a desire for unity but an unwillingness to compromise. One more point -- the Reformation was an interesting and dangerous time. There was a consistent threat of war against the evangelicals. Some of the evangelicals (not Melanchthon) brought this on themselves. I highly recommend this book. |
