Editorial Reviews

Review

Darrell Bain has given us another winner. The science fiction community is lucky to have him. I say read this book. --Travis S. "Doc" Taylor, author of The Tau Ceti Agenda

This is one roller coaster ride that just didn't stop to enable you to get your breath back. Things happen fast and furious, going from one scene to another and you have no choice but to read on to see what is going to happen next. --Annette Gisby, author of Shadows of the Rose

I'd rate this as a satirical commentary on a par with Jonathan Swift's work, by a very able writer who sees clearly what fate can await mankind if hate is allowed to breed hate. A flag being raised to warn of danger ahead. Highly recommended for any reader. This is a tale to enjoy, one to remember and one that will make you think as it forces us to face our biases. Well worth the time, a must read for any serious thinker. --Anne K. Edwards, author of The Last to Fall

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete Rubbish., August 5, 2011

This review is from: The Melanin Apocalypse (Paperback)
My first thought was "this must be an advance review copy because they wouldn't publish it like this and expect it to sell, would they?"

It's poorly written. Nearly every page or two there is a "thought-break" because the story is told by a series of scenes, and each scene is separated by a break. The author is not capable of carrying a single scene, or thread, for longer than a couple pages.

It's not original prose by any means. From page 41 "... the underground tanks of diesel fuel hadn't been torched like so many of the buildings in the orgy of wanton destruction." Orgy of wanton destruction? Are you kidding me? Did he pull this straight out of a 70s novel?

I think the book attempts to have the same tone as One Second After, but, unlike that book, the premise to this one is ridiculous. Not only is there a plague that selects on skin color (ok, I'll suspend disbelief for a minute), but once the public realizes this, all the affected people (mainly blacks) riot and start killing every white person they find. Err... that's supposed to be logical? Oh, wait, they don't kill everyone... of course, they kidnap and plan for the serial raping of all the white women they can find.

I'm going to stop now, because the book is actually much worse than what I've indicated here... and even the author's "apology" in the Afterword for the negative attitudes portrayed didn't eliminate the horrible stink this book left behind.

5.0 out of 5 stars exciting timely thriller, October 23, 2008
This review is from: The Melanin Apocalypse (Paperback)

The genetically altered virus surfaced in Africa killing anyone whose body cells contained a certain level of melanin. Dark skinned people were dying in biblical numbers. As Africa descends into deadly anarchy, the virus leaves the continent for other nations around the world. Globalization collapses drowning the global economy in its tsunami. In the United States, mob chaos begins to reign so Martial Law is invoked.

While everyone is reeling and rioting and looting is everywhere, and CDC scientists work around the clock for a cure, a second virus explodes on the world. This time the customized killer is Middle Eastern people. At about the same time, Church of Blacks militant members lay siege to the CDC. Former soldier Doug Craddock, a Caucasian, providing security to the scientists, tries to persuade the angry militants that this is their best bet for a cure; but no one seems interested in anything except stringing up a white man

The exciting THE MELANIN APOCALYPSE is perfect timing with the economy crashing and the Powell endorsement properly targeting the hate towards specific groups as the real anti-Americanism. The premise is built on genome research allows customizing medical cures can also do the opposite causing specified global holocausts. However, the key to this superb cautionary science fiction thriller is how people act and react to the customized deadly viruses.
