A set of wooden blocks provides an opportunity for a child to pass the hours constructing towers, castles, or dollhouses. Educational factor:

The Good: Toy blocks are built for durability and will "grow" with your child for years of play.

The Challenging: We wish the storage box was as sturdy as the blocks.

In a Nutshell: Wood blocks in interesting shapes and bright colors offer years of creative fun.

Classic Toy Provides Hours of Fun
This classic wood block set includes 100 solid wood blocks painted bright red, blue, yellow, and green. A versatile variety of shapes are included: rectangular prisms, cubes, cylinders, half circles, arches, and two different sizes of rectangular planks and triangles.

The blocks come in a variety of sizes including the half-circle measuring about 1-1/2 inches long and the tallest rectangular plank measuring about 3-1/2 inches long. Their size, combined with the wonderful variety of shapes, makes them just challenging enough for younger children to manipulate. A three-year-old tester enjoyed trying to build towers and walls as tall as possible, as well as sorting the blocks by shape and color. And the smaller size of the blocks keeps them interesting for older children, too--so kids can easily get many years of use out of them.

High-Quality Construction
Parents will appreciate the safe, durable construction of these blocks. Though they're made of solid wood, these blocks are light in weight, which makes them safer for small children. The blocks have rounded edges and a smooth painted finish that won't splinter with play.

The only drawback: while many Melissa & Doug toys come packaged in long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing storage containers, this set of blocks comes in a cardboard box. But while the box won't last forever, these blocks will. And as with all of their products, Melissa & Doug states that this toy is made with non-toxic coatings and meets or exceeds US toy testing standards.

About Melissa & Doug
Started in the garage at Doug's parents' house in 1988, Melissa & Doug has grown to become one of the most popular toy makers in the world. Their toys have garnered dozens of parenting and "best toy" awards over the years, and have been featured widely in national print media and on television.

One of the company's points of pride is that their toys are thoroughly tested for safety, and meet all US consumer product safety regulations. The toys are tested at the factory of origin during various phases of the production process to ensure that every toy meets the company's stringent safety requirements every step along the way. In particular, the paints and coatings on Melissa & Doug toys are tested frequently to be sure they meet or exceed government recommendations limiting heavy metals and lead in children's items.

Since day one, Melissa & Doug has been in compliance with every US consumer product safety regulation and will continue to stay compliant as the laws continue to evolve, assuring parents that their children can have a safe childhood while playing with Melissa & Doug toys.

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I bought two boxes of these blocks for my son when he was two because blocks are a wonderful open ended toy. The blocks were well made and the paint never chipped on ours. Although the product was as described I would not buy them again.

I found these to be so small it took a lot of patience and time to build larger structures. My son's creations would take a while to build, then fall over easily. My son and I had a few opportunities to play with larger blocks and it was so much fun to assemble huge, more stable towers, quickly. I gave all our little blocks away and bought the Melissa and Doug set of 60. We now have a daughter who is almost one and both children use them daily in different ways. If I could do it all over again I would have saved money and began with the set of 60. We are considering a second set of the larger blocks since they are so much fun and well worth the money. [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Less is more, in the toy world January 9, 2007

Of all the high-tech gadgets my kids got during Christmas, the toy they kept going back to was these blocks and another little block village set that I bought to go along with this one. Even the 13-year-old son of a friend got involved. Good toy that will keep interest!

4.0 out of 5 stars Grandson LOVES these blocks!! October 23, 2008

My 4 year old grandson, and his parents, were thrilled when he receieved these blocks yesterday. We'd been unable to find colored wooden blocks in any local stores. I was happy to see that the yellow blocks were just as vibrant as the red and blue. In the picture I saw they looked rather pale.

What I wish I'd known prior to purchase is the dimensions of the blocks. They are smaller and thinner than I had anticipated. That being said, their size has not diminished my grandson's enjoyment one iota. He likes to build roads with the blocks and can't wait to build the castle pictured on the box the blocks came in. (As soon as we can find a time when his little sister isn't around to knock it down, that is.)

I do like the variety of shapes as it helps him to learn more about triangles, squares, rectangles, etc. The small size of the blocks is the only thing that detracted from the purchase. Otherwise they earned an A+ from this grandma!

2.0 out of 5 stars Pieces are too small and light November 22, 2011

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
This is a durable, quality toy. Colors are vivid and the paint endures constant falling/smashing. However, pieces are too small for any child less than 4; not because they cannot hold it but because they do not provide adequate stability when the child tries to build something. If the pieces are not leveled perfectly, they fall apart with the slightest touch because they are too small, narrow, and LIGHT. And if your child is less than 4 years old, s/he probably will not have the patience to built up anything that falls apart constantly. Overall, toy has very good material quality, but I would go for sets with bigger pieces if the child is not 4 or older.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tried and True December 31, 2007

We are grand parents from the pre-computer, pre-video game era, when a carboard box became a puppet theatre and a sheet over a couple of chairs became a tent on a jungle safari. Wooden blocks leave it to the child's imagination as to what he or she can create. The Melissa and Doug products are naturally simple wooden shapes. The craftsmanship is excellent and the blocks will last for years (requiring no upgrades or patches!).

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad smell June 22, 2011
Durability: 1.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 1.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I was very disappointed by this purchase as the blocks have a very strong smell from the paint. I got a headache from it and didn't let my child play with them afterwards. I expected more from this company.

4.0 out of 5 stars Small and smelly March 26, 2010

I ordered these blocks as a gift for my 1-year-old, who is getting really into stacking blocks. They just arrived today, and I noticed two things immediately. First, they are VERY SMALL! I'd read the other reviews commenting on this, but I was still surprised by the size. I'd say most of the pieces are between 1-2" on the longest dimension-- so, a bit smaller than a golf ball, not really great for building large structures.

Second, the blocks I received have a strong, unpleasant chemical odor to them-- like burnt garbage, maybe?-- that still hasn't dissipated after about 8 hours of sitting outside on a windy day. I'm hoping this will go away in time, since it's probably not worth sending them back, but in any case don't count on your kid being able to play with the blocks right out of the box.

EDITED: I called the Melissa and Doug customer service line and they assured me that the odor problem is not normal for this toy. They're sending me a free replacement in the mail. The person I spoke to was very friendly, and I was extremely impressed with the M&D customer service experience.
