What We Think

Fun factor:

Educational factor:
Novelty factor:

The Good: Sturdy wood toy will stand up to years of play

The Challenging: Cute, painted, wood storage container is built to last, but would be improved with the addition of a cover

In a Nutshell: Toy pizza with topping and utensils offers kids fun, creative props for imaginary play

Kids love serving up their delicious pizza creations with the wooden pizza cutter and server. View larger.

With 54 pizza toppings, children can customize pies for their friends and family. View larger.
Make, Bake, and Serve Pizza
The wooden pizza consists of six "slices" that are held together by Velcro. Each piece has three Velcro disks for attaching the pizza toppings. Your child can assemble the pizza right on the cheerful green pizza tray. Using pepperoni, mushroom, or peppers, or a combination of the three toppings, she can make a pizza that almost looks good enough to eat.

Once the pizza is "ready," the child can use the pizza cutter to cut the pizza. It actually has a rolling blade, just like an authentic utensil, and since the pizza slices are held together with Velcro, it makes a fun crunching sound when it's cut. Your little pizza chef can then dish out pizza to her customers with the included server. (Note that the toy kitchen utensils are not meant for use with real food or with real kitchen appliances.)

Play and Learn
Pretend play is a very important part of childhood development, and the Pizza Party toy gives children fun, straightforward tools to inspire their imaginations. We also love that this toy is perfect for both independent and interactive playtime, giving parents the opportunity to help kids learn while playing, too. For example, children can learn counting concepts while preparing pizza: ask them to count the number of mushrooms on the pizza, or to put 10 peppers on her pizza.

Sturdy Wood Construction
The Pizza Party comes with 54 disk-shaped pizza toppings -- three of each kind -- which is enough to create an all-pepperoni, all-peppers, or all-mushroom pizza, as well as make up whatever combination your child chooses. We like that there are an abundance of toppings pieces, so that the inevitable loss of a couple of pieces won't ruin the whole toy. That said, we do wish that the cute, painted wood storage container came with a cover to help keep the pieces in place a bit better.

With its sturdy wood construction and high-quality materials, this toy is made to last. And as with all of their products, Melissa & Doug states that this toy is made with non-toxic coatings and meets or exceeds US toy testing standards.

About Melissa & Doug
Started in the garage at Doug's parents' house in 1988, Melissa & Doug has grown to become one of the most popular toy makers in the world. Their toys have garnered dozens of parenting and "best toy" awards over the years, and have been featured widely in national print media and on television.

One of the company's points of pride is that their toys are thoroughly tested for safety, and meet all US consumer product safety regulations. The toys are tested at the factory of origin during various phases of the production process to ensure that every toy meets the company's stringent safety requirements every step along the way. In particular, the paints and coatings on Melissa & Doug toys are tested frequently to be sure they meet or exceed government recommendations limiting heavy metals and lead in children's items.

Since day one, Melissa & Doug has been in compliance with every US consumer product safety regulation and will continue to stay compliant as the laws continue to evolve, assuring parents that their children can have a safe childhood while playing with Melissa & Doug toys.

What's in the box Toy pizza, 54 "pizza topping" pieces, wood pizza server and pizza cutter.

This toy gets 4 stars because after 1 day my daughter broke out the wooden divider, and the extensive pieces.
My daughter loves this toy! It is one of her favorite play foods, and I am about sick of pizza! There are quite a few pieces to the set and I would not recommend this for a household where elements of toys are easily destroyed or lost. The velcro attaches easily.
This is a great toy to begin teaching counting and fractions. We also own the Cutting Food Box by Lights, Camera, Interaction. We were initially introduced to these great toy products by my aunt who teaches violin. She uses these toys to explain musical notation and fractions. The utilization of this toy for introductory math has been invaluable for teaching our daughter. Sometimes we don't realize how much she understands these concepts. The parts hold up extremely well to the 2 1/2 year old age group, but I must reiterate - these are not for a family that doesn't not keep up with parts to games or toys. It is also a toy that is best used with hands-on adult expaination. The most educational experience can be derived that way (I guess, as with all things in life.)
What is especially fun is when she mixes the 2 toys together and I get a slice of pizza with a carrot or watermelon slice on it.

This is a great toy, it is lots of fun, but I must admit, if it weren't for the fact I found it at TJ MAXX for about 75% less than most stores, I would never have bought it. My son loves "cutting" the pizza and serving it to us. He even uses the green pizza tray like a try at a restaurant and takes our orders. He has learned about pepper, pepperoni and mushrooms, but I don't think that is a skill we really need to work on. Beware the paint chips off very easley, as with most Melissa and Doug toys. I went to Papa Johns and told them about my son's pizza toy and they happily gave me a real pizza box for him to play with.

I have several products from Melissa and Doug including dress up dolls, musical instruments and this pizza set. All of them are constructed beautifully, inspire hours of play and are great toys. But why on earth do Melissa and Doug provide trays / boxes to store them without any lids? Individual pieces go missing and spread around. Is this just bad design or a silly way to cut production costs? You tell me.

My son as several of these at his day care and they are consistently popular with both boys and girls. The kids like to share the pieces of pizza with the teachers and other kids, so its great for cooperative play.

i ordered this and it was quite nice. recently i got the same thing as a gift. i compared the two sets (both still in wrapping) and realised they are slightly different size and slightly different quality. the one from Amazon is of poorer quality e.g. paint is not within the lines, finishing box looks abit rougher. I also order the wooden cutting fruit crate from Amazon and was shocked at the quality. looks like someone forgot to finish painting 2 of the pieces and just packed the in with the rest. will not order Melissa & Doug from Amazon again.

Big fans of Melissa & Doug's wooden toys for our children, especially the food and kitchen play items, as my husband is a chef and my kids LOVE to cook! We have the birthday cake set, the wedding cake set and the Christmas cookie set, so these are pretty similar to the pizza set. The pizza "slices" Velcro together, as do the "toppings"- this set has plenty of toppings for any combination of mushroom, pepperoni or pepper pizza. My only complaint is that the pizza roller, while big, doesn't do the greatest job of cutting through the slices, especially if the toppings get in the way. So we took the wooden knife from our cookie set and and cut the pizza like you would a cake. Its how we cut real pizza so my kids are OK with it. (They like to make tracks in the carpet with the pizza cutter instead!)
Overall I'm very pleased with this play set. It is excellent quality, very durable for little kid play and its relatively safe- no harmful chemicals or sharp edges or anything like that. Its colorful and realistic enough without being cartoonish but it is obvious its a toy- my 5 and 2 year old know this is NOT real food. However, if you have a toddler prone to putting small toys in their mouths- especially anything that looks like food- be aware that the "toppings" will look very appetizing!
The price is great too! In our local stores, a Melissa & Doug play set usually runs around $20+ and I try to shop at places that accept 20% coupons, but with my Prime membership, this was a great deal! And these play sets make great gifts as the wooden packaging serves as storage as well. (Our playsets are stacked in my kids' "kitchen" with the writing right on the side identifying what each play set is; I love it!)
I highly recommend this and all of Melissa & Doug's wooden food play sets!
