My 3 and 8 year old boys love this treasure chest. It is heavy, very sturdy and well constructed. The skull latch pivotes to side to release lock, and it is easy enough for my 3-year-old to operate easily. Inside the chest is a slightly raised bottom with three planks of wood; the middle plank can be removed to access the secret compartment. The fabric flag and eye patch are substantial enough. The plastic coins are heavy, thick, well-made and deeply imprinted with a skull. The chest is large enough to hide other objects. I like to fill it with different things and have them go on a treasure hunt. Measure approx. 9.5" wide, 6.5" deep, 7.25" tall.

My daughter (age 4.5) received this for Christmas after admiring it at her cousin's house for over a year and asking for it every time she saw it in stores. Since then she has played with it over and over again and totally loves it. Please don't let the other comment on this sway you, I don't know what that person is talking about. This is similar to other Melissa and Doug toys, which I think are very durable, quality, classic products. Your child will have a blast pretending to be a pirate, counting the "gold" and hiding secret treasures in the secret compartment at the bottom of the chest. You don't need a lot of bells and whistles to have very fun, imaginitive play. I highly recommend this over all the new Pirates of the Caribbean branded products which shouldn't even be marketed to children in the first place (hello, it's a grown-up movie!) - this product is much more appropriate for young children. Make yourself a newspaper hat and have some old fashioned fun with this great toy!!!

My son is 11 years old and wanted the chest just to keep his own personal treasures. He loves it. It's smaller than i thought it would be but it's just right for what he uses it for.

Our kids LOVE treasure chests, we hide things in them and play pirate often. We bought this toy for our son for Christmas and by the end of that day the top of the chest had fallen off! The hinge is secured with rivets and evidently these are not strong enough to secure the top of the chest! Now we have a chest in two pieces, rendering it useless! The wood seems to thin to try and replace the rivets with screws, but at this point we may try that just to give it one last chance. For $22.00 it should be much more durable!

The chest is fairly solid (we've had some problems with a rivet but it's not a big deal. The hidden compartment is good, although, it would be nice if there was a way to brace it in, in case the chest is flipped over...again, not a biggie. The coins are nearly unbreakable, but dull copper, which is unexciting to my 5 year old, but cheap plastic coins are available in party supply store for practically dirt. The eye patch is ignored and the Jolly Roger is ignored, but when he wants to play pirates, this chest is always part of the play - every time. Another winner from Melissa & Doug.

I purchased this for my son for his birthday. He loves it! It is well made out of wood, not plastic, and has a "hidden" compartment on the bottom for special treasures. It also comes with a bag of "gold" coins and a pirate eyepatch and flag. I love Melissa & Doug toys, they're well made and fun, more like the ones I was used to playing with when I was little. The only thing I would change about this toy is the hinges on the chest are a bit delicate and should be handled with care, not easy when you're talking about boys!

What a great pirate chest! The colors are fine, it looks like an old chest. the clasp is a cool skull with two different jewel colored eyes.
The quality is just fine. Our son is 3 and he has played with this chest since Christmas and hasn't had a problem. I made sure to have some small wood screws and hinges on hand in case he did break the lid off as other reviewers stated, but we haven't needed them. (I am concerned the skull clasp may break before anything else).
The coins it comes with are pretty cheesie but we bought it for the chest not the things that come with it. The eye patch is pretty cool though, its not the single rubberband type, it actually has a velcro closure and is real material all the way around.
Our son loves his pirate treasure chest and he loves using the false bottom. Of course you can tell it has a false bottom, its a toy and is designed for kids to be able to use. (Its not gonna hide your real stuff from anyone...lol some reviews crack me up).
Recommend this toy for your pirate loving kids!

I bought this for my son to store his rock collection. His big brother already uses on for the same purpose. I am so disappointed because this has big green paint spots on it and is missing metal hardware handles on the side. It seems like it is second quality. It did arrive in plastic with the Melissa and Doug cardboard. I am puzzled why this one differs from the first one I bought in a store.
I recommend the treasure chest but I am disappointed with the one Amazon sent me. I wanted to investigate with Amazon if I had bought a second or but it seems like my only choices are to keep it or return it.

Our 3 & 6 year olds love this chest! What you see is what you get. It's smallish(by adult standards) made of lightweight wood, but appropriate for this age group and little hands. There's a skull lock with jeweled colored eyes that capture the light; the lock swings to the side to open the top. Inside, one of the small planks, which has a small curved finger insert, removes to expose the secret compartment below the false bottom.

The coins are plastic with a red pouch; the patch has a velcro attachment on a stretchable band, and finally, there's a cool, pirate bandana, or I guess you could make it into a flag.

When the kids discovered the chest in their playhouse, I was surprised how quickly they knew how to open the latch and what to do with everything. Kids are smart, and boy, do they know how to play! Especially, our two little girls.

The toy appears durable enough. I suppose if one stomped on it, jumped on it, threw it down on the concrete there'd be walk-the-plank trouble. The top hinge is on the thin side, but so far so good with two very active kiddoes. Some might want a more realistic pirate chest, but for this age group, it's perfect. In general, we enjoy Melissa and Doug's stuff. Ay, Matey!

This is a great toy for little imaginations. My 4 yr old grandson loved having a chest to hide all his jewels in.It isnt made cheapley very durable.we are very pleased with this product.
