I've purchased, I think, eight or nine of these puppets for my autistic son, plus their kit for making his own puppet. For the first two or three that we received I truly had the thought, "Man, we must have gotten lucky and the person making this one was having a good day!" but have now come to see that every puppet is is made on a good day.

They look really cool, are the perfect size, are made really well. I'm one of those people that believes that you get what you pay for so am still a little queasy when paying so little, but in this case you just simply get much more than you pay for. I swear that that's true.

I think it's important to try and put honest pros and cons in the reviews, but despite trying really hard I can't come up with any cons. They are packaged well, shipped quickly, beautiful, high quality products...man, I can't really find anything to criticize.

I feel really good every time I give them my money and I can't imagine ordering from another company that might compete with Melissa and Doug's on anything comparable.

(Edit: Any time I read such a one sided review I assume that it was probably written by someone from the company selling the product. I'm not associated with this company in any way beyond being a happy customer. Honest.)

Dwayne

Teaching a KG class at my church really helps the younger ones with this wonderful visualization of a king. It was very big and sturdy!

This puppet is made very well, very nice details, with the gold trim on the coat and the purple cape. His face got smashed a little during shipment, so hopefully his mishapen nose and face will get back to normal through use. The crown gets smashed down a little too, of course, after being smooshed into a package for shipment. But it's really cool to have a puppet of muppet look and quality to use in your own home with your kids! The wooden stick that inserts into either hand is a really fun addition to make him more animated. You can't beat the price at 13$, that's great!

I agree with the other reviewers on the "mouth" being difficult to act with. What is interesting is that we have 9 puppets and this model in particular is difficult to use. Others (like the chef) are not. The difference seems to be that the king has a significantly different shaped head with a more "protruding" chin. The problem basically seems to be that my thumb does not have as much room as with other puppets (other puppets your thumb actually extends past your fingers). With your thumb positioned slightly behind your top fingers, it tends to be slightly uncomfortable.

However - this issue has not caused much complaint for me. If I was performing for Broadway - maybe I would want my money back, but for now my 3 year old doesn't know the difference.

I was a bit surprised that the puppet was smaller than i thought it was going to be. It became more clear to me after messing around with it, that it's probably meant more for a childs hand. Im an adult male with medium size hands and i, like another reviewer had a bit a difficulty making the mouth move the proper way. It was just a little sloppy to control as my top of mouth fingers felt like sliding around alot and not able to maintain a good firm control of the mouth movements. Other than that issue, i think this puppet is exceptionally made and would be a great puppet for some kids or even a mom who wants to perform for her kids. If your a dad thinking you will be able to use this toy with much use, you might want to look for some bigger stage puppets as you will find your hand barely fitting into the head.

I bought this puppet and 3 similar M&D puppets (the knight, the dragon, and the princess) and my fingers tend to slip out of the mouth when attempting to make the lips move. For this reason, I've yet to put on a performance that doesn't end with the puppet cussing. My fingers (average size male) simply can't get a grip on the inner mouthpiece! I agree these are great quality, very whimsical and well appointed--but FUNctionality gets a 2/5. I'm surprised not more people have mentioned this flaw.

This is so cool. Looks just like King Friday from Mr Rogers show. it is impeccable workmanship. it's easy to get your hand in and very durable. the mouth moves great and there's even a wooden handle to operate his arm for the other hand. if you like puppets this is great. only thing it needs is a stand. so made one out of wood dowling and round ball for top of head and put on a small piece of plywood. looks like it came with it. great price. saw it stores for far more money.
