From the Manufacturer

Fun on Aisle Five

Take your shopping list and your teddy bear and get ready to shop. Our durable metal shopping cart looks just like those in real stores. Heavy gauge steel construction includes 360 degree pivoting front wheels, easy-grip handle, and a folding seat so a child and his or her favorite companion can navigate the aisles in style.

Creative Pretend Play

There are endless play possibilities with this incredibly durable metal shopping cart.

Children love playing grocery store; they can collect play food in the shopping cart, roll to the pretend checkout and pay, or stock the shelves with supplies. Encourage sorting, planning, and motor skills by creating a shopping list with pictures or simple words and then asking a child to fill the order, or ask him or her to put all of one kind of play food in the cart (like frozen foods), then roll to the end of the room, unload it, and return for something else (like fruits and veggies).

The Melissa & Doug Shopping Cart was an unexpected find after going through screen after screen of overpriced plastic junk.

This cart is all steel, except for the plastic handle (which has a steel core), the folding plastic "kids" seat for a doll and the plastic wheels. This cart looks like the real ones in the stores and it's built to last! Assembly is a breeze, too.

The two front wheels rotate 360 degrees for steering and they are mounted on spring loaded "legs". If you child leans into the cart from the front or sides, it will compress causing a rubber "foot" to hit the floor and stop the cart from moving forward or backward. There are also rubber "feet" on the left and right sides.

The only "dangerous" thing I can see with this cart is where the plastic wheels are minimally covered by steel "fenders" for mounting purposes. I can foresee a pinched finger or two in our daughter's future, but you can't shield your children from everything in the world that might hurt them, nor do I feel you should. In this out-of-control P.C. country of ours, we're raising a nation of coddled kids that can't think or fend for themselves. OK, I'm off my soapbox!

One other thing, if this cart will be used indoors (and I'm sure it will be) it will be downright hazardous to your furniture. I have used the padded shipping material to create bumpers for the cart to try and protect our furniture. A little cutting with scissors and a few cable-ties and you're in business.

Buy this cart first, you won't be disappointed!

For Christmas this year, our 3 year old girl asked for a couple things: Smurfs, markers, and a grocery cart. God only knows why a grocery cart, but we rolled with it; why not. Leading up to the big day, I stopped by that big toy store to check out what they had in stock, and picked up a plastic jobby that came with a few groceries. Seemed sufficient.

I returned home with the plastic grocery cart (and a boatload of other things) and proudly showed my wife what I had accomplished all by myself! I expected a joyful response to my good deeds, but was met only with a reproachful glare. "Did you see the Melissa & Doug shopping cart in her Amazon wish list?", she inquired. "I did not, ma'am. Do tell me more of this product of which you speak."

As soon as I saw the M&D option, I realized how comprehensively I had failed my child, my wife, and probably everyone who had ever offered me a kind word or the time of day. Without delay, I clicked "Buy it Now" with 2 day shipping.

The grocery cart arrived promptly in a box that seemed awfully small for what was supposed to be inside. But lo and behold, the grocery cart smugly emerged, fully assembled, and was of such high quality that I almost puked. The casters (wheels) were of unreasonably high quality, and the metal of the cart itself... URG! I'm getting angry just thinking about how well this thing is made. It's in the kitchen right now, next to me as I'm typing... judging me... Comparing itself to me... Belittling me...

Stupid grocery cart.

Highly recommended, if you can HANDLE IT!

I love this shopping cart and my kids could play with it for hours. It is well made and is one of the cutest things in the M&D lineup. However, the metal cart scratches furniture and walls more than other plastic carts. Ours also has a place on the bottom where the steel spindle is a little rough and my kids seem to scratch their hands on it when they play with it. If you have good furniture I would opt for a plastic cart, if your furniture is beat to heck already this is a great little cart. :)

We had one slight hesitation purchasing this: The reviews are incredible, but will it bang up the walls? We unfortunately went with the positive reviews.. and have now given this shopping cart away and have purchased a plastic one. Never has my daughter's joy been greater at the sight of a toy shopping cart (incredible toy), but really - we have a piano.. bookshelves.. walls.. other children for goodness sake! You just simply can't put a little one behind something metal on wheels and not be nervous. Do you really want your child's toys to cause your heart to skip a beat every time you hear a "bang" in the other room?

Additionally, there's a huge safety concern with this toy. On more than one occasion (and then with company - OY!), a little one would actually turn the thing over on themselves and get stuck. Beware that this is HEAVY. It is real metal, and TWICE we had a leg stuck in the bottom part with the heavy top laying on top of my child, with them screaming. That's where I drew the line.

It is uncanny the way the front wheels of the cart get "stuck" on carpet, which make it TOP OVER FORWARDS, taking the child with it (not a 5 year old, but a 2 or 3 year old, OH YES). This happened so many times to us, I just cannot fathom why there are 300 - 5 star reviews for this product! Really, I should have gone with my gut.

Just can't recommend it, in fact I don't write many reviews but I picked this one out to state a warning because it REALLY is not a safe or wise purchase. Try a different cart!

P.S. Just a note on toy groceries - what little ones love best is if you hold onto your OWN containers and wash them. You can have a little shelf set up of REAL sour cream container, 1/2 gal. milk, egg carton, ketchup, boxed cake mix boxes, etc. They LOVE THIS! And you've got it in the kitchen already!
