Hit the Road with Sturdy Wooden Construction

The Car Carrier is made with an eye for sturdy, dependable detail that allows your child to play for hours without interruption. The long ramp folds easily along its hinges, which encourages and facilitates your child's exploration with the way certain hinges and constructions may move to create new formations. This design encourages imaginative play while simultaneously promoting coordination and the development of fine motor skills.

When its ramp is unfolded, the Car Carrier measures 5-3/4 by 12 by 3 inches (H x W x D). At this size, the toy is small enough for young hands to grab and push or pull along, but large enough to necessitate full-body movement if the child wants to move the Car Carrier along wandering paths.

Experience Different Terrains

Though the Car Carrier works fine on all terrains, our testers found that the smooth, plastic wheels turned most easily on surfaces that create some friction, like carpet or short grass. In addition, the individual cars can, of course, continue on their own journeys separate from the car carrier itself. Cars are also designed specifically to fit with wooden train sets, allowing for speedy play along racetracks and with other vehicles.

About Melissa & Doug

Melissa & Doug toys meet all US consumer product safety regulations. We recently gave this to a friend's little boy for his 2nd birthday - he and all the other boys at the party played with it constantly! It says ages 3+ on the package, but the only small parts are the wheels, which seem well-attached. My 3 year old son liked the toy too, but the 2 year old boys spent far more time playing with it. The top rack slides down so the cars can all drive off the car carrier. I was impressed at how well-made the toy is and I came on today to buy another one to put away as a Christmas gift for my 1.5 year old.

I bought this for my 2-year old son who LOVES playing with it, but I don't let him use the blue car after it tested positive for lead paint.

Here is the background: A local non-profit was having a free toy testing event for lead. I brought in some older toys and, on a whim, I grabbed all the cars associated with this product. I was shocked to find out that the blue car tested positive for lead (63 ppm using a x-ray fluorescence machine). I called the 800 number for "Melissa and Doug." They assured me that all their products meet or exceed current regulations and that they do consistent testing for all their paints. They also said that they test using a "leachability" test which is a more accurate test than the x-ray fluorescence. They said they would send me the test results of that particular paint batch so I could review the results, but I was never sent anything. In the end, I am really dissappointed that a company promoting safe, non-toxic toys would allow any lead in their paint at all - and now I am reluctant to buy anything from this company again.

My grandsons love this toy - one is 3 years and the other is 2. I'm ordering another so they don't have to share. They love moving the carrier rack up and down and driving the cars off. They 'drive' the truck off around the furniture legs and come back for the cars to load them back up. This toy encourages language development as we talk about where the truck is going and where the cars will be parked, what color car should go where, etc. Great for imaginative play.

I purchased this toy for a 2 year old that loves cars and he played with this thing for hours. It seems to be pretty durable. Many of the parents were amazed at how simple the toy was, but still provided a great learning experience. I have a number of Melissa & Doug items for my own child and they all seem to be pretty well made.

My 2 1/2 year old LOVES this toy. He's all about trucks and this one he can do more than just push around. It was his FAVORITE until it broke...twice. My son is not particularly rambunctious or hard on his toys. He was trying to make it navigate a small pile of dirt in the garden and apparently pushed too hard from the top of the trailer section and the bottoms of the supports broke on both sides. There is no way to fix that. I watched him do this and he was not being rough. My suggestion to other parents is to make sure this stays and inside toy. I think the dirt took the pressure off the wheels and that created a weak spot. I let him continue to play with the front cab and a few weeks later a big chunk in the left headlight came off. I am pretty sure he dropped it. I guess I just expected more from a wooden toy. All his other wooden toys have withstood some mild abuse. I'm quite torn in whether I should buy him another one because he loved it so much, but don't want to waste any more $$$.

The quality of Melissa and Doug toys is on a steady decline. This toy feels cheaply made and the paint chips easily.
Try haba and the German toys, a little more money but they last forever and have quality you can feel.

I'm actually shocked at the great reviews for this product! My son received this as a gift and it was broken within the first day! He is an average boy so tough but not too tough on his toys, he doesn't throw things or anything so I was surprised at how fast it fell apart. The little cars are fine but the carrier itself is garbage. My husband even tried a few times to glue it back together but it finally went in the trash.

Pieces of the wooden trailer broke within 3 days if owning this toy. My son was not playing with it rough or carelessly. I would not recommend this.
