What a waste of money - No more M&D products for us!

Also, the puzzle sounds go off at random times, even if no one is near it, sometimes turning the lights on or off makes the puzzle make noise.
Allison L. Allen
Oh, and the animal sounds are a bit more obnoxious and aggressive which just sounds annoying.

I was really disappointed by the quality of this puzzle. The concept is great - what a great way to reinforce what I'm teaching my 17-month-old about the sounds that animals make! Too bad it's so poorly executed. As other reviewers have mentioned, the animal sounds aren't always accurate. The zebra barks like a chihuahua, and the penguin sounds like a flock of seagulls. The worst feature is the inconsistency of the sounds working. Sometimes we can't get certain animals to sound, no matter how we put the piece in. Other times, the wrong piece will make a sound in a mismatching hole, or even your finger will make the sound. The other day, the puzzle sounds went off when nobody was even near it! I would also love it if the puzzle had an "off" button. If my daughter is playing with it for a long time, I don't necessarily want to hear the barking zebra over and over. The only way to turn off the sound would be to unscrew the battery compartment and take out the battery. I may do this, actually, because the sounds are so annoying. It is a sturdy puzzle and my daughter really enjoys matching the pieces. She also has the musical instrument puzzle and likes to work on them both at once.

I should have known. I should have known that any gifts from the mother-in-law should be deemed cursed. Oh sure, Melissa & Doug Zoo Animals Sound Puzzle looks good and well. Strong and durable wood frame. Well fitting pieces. Colorful, decent animal graphics. The trouble is in its circuitry. You see, the board is electrical - in that a piece, when mated with the board, incites an animal noise. In theory, anyways. The reality is a combination of the following:
1) no noise at all - repeated attempts are futile
2) noise of a different animal
3) randomly makes 'monkey' noises during odd hours of the day
4) makes an animal noise - a cheap sounding, hardly recognizable squelch

Tonight is the night. Tonight, after hearing a monkey scream randomly from the depths of the toy box, long after my child has gone to sleep, I have sentenced this toy to the dumpster. Before I do, however, I leave this note as a warning to others.

Do not purchase. There are plenty of toys that fit the puzzle task. This is not one of them.

Our 20 month old daughter received this puzzle as a gift. It is her favorite puzzle, because when you place the pieces in, the animal makes noise. The noises are a little strange, though. Some sound just like they should, but a couple make strange sounds. There is a negative about the sounds: Each piece has a sensor on the back, and in each hole there is a sensor. The idea is when you match them you get the animal sound. However, it's much more sensitive than this. If you match the wrong piece, it will still make the sound of the animal on the board, and even if you just cover it with your finger, it will make the animal's sound. I wish it actually required the correct pieces to be matched up to work. I think this would encourage children more to get things right. Our daughter does love the sounds, though, and even at just a month older, she has no problems matching the right pieces, so the sound thing isn't really an issue anymore. It is fun for her to have a puzzle that helps her work on her animal sounds. Overall, it is a good puzzle - well made, and durable.

The M&D sound puzzles make me not want to buy anything else from them. The materials are cheap and and worse, the audio has very basic problems that defeat the purpose of the puzzles. Many of the clips aren't even identifiable as the animal they are supposed to match, and in fact, THERE IS NO CORRELATION BETWEEN THE PUZZLE PIECE AND ITS DESIGNATED SPOT.

My 2 yr old (25 month)son got the rescue vehicle sound puzzle (fire truck, ambulance, police car, etc) from his grandma and loved it (even though it didn't have batteries in it) so when we saw more of these at babies r us we got them. The next day when we put batteries in them we noticed that not all of the animals make sounds on the different puzzles. My son also tends to dump the pieces out and leave them scattered on the floor which is how I found this out ... In the middle of the night while making a bottle for my newborn I turned the lights out and all of a sudden the puzzles started making monkey noises, moo'ing, quacking, etc! Talk about scaring the crap out of me!! And last week after I put my sons down for an afternoon nap, I'm in my room with the door shut (no one else in the apartment and toddler asleep in his bed) I hear random puzzle noises coming from the living room!!! Also creepy!! The puzzles are cool, but I recommend using them without batteries to save yourself from jumping out of your skin lol The sounds are accurate as far as I know.

I just bought this puzzle and I really wish I would have read these reviews beforehand. (I bought it at a nearby store) we bought the zoo one and the farm one with the intention of giving one to our daughter and one to our friends son for his birthday. Well, we just opened our daughters.. (The zoo one) and as many of the other reviewers said...it's not all that impressive. It looked cool and my daughter loves her books that make animals noises so I figured this would be great. I thought that the pieces sensors would match up as to help her understand where each one would go, but it goes off if her hands or feet touch it, so that kind of defeats the purpose. Oh, and the animal sounds are a bit more obnoxious and aggressive which just sounds annoying. So, at the end of the day...we are stuck with this and it was definitely not worth the money. At least I can take the other one back!
