I was so excited to see this Wooden Cutting Fruit Crate because my older daughter and niece have the old Cutting Food Box but since we are gluten free the fruit seemed like a nice addition for the little kids. Unfortunately it is not nearly the same quality. The pieces don't seem to fit together as snuggly and the velcro isn't as strong so it is more as if the fruit falls apart instead of the cutting sensation the first set has. Also the wooden food itself doesn't feel as substantial/heavy and it doesn't come in a box with a lid like the older set. I don't know if the quality of the Cutting food box has gone down as well or if it is just this set, but I am pretty disappointed.

We have a lot of Melissa and Doug toys. The cutting food set is my daughter's favorite toy so I bought this set to go along with it. We just brought it home from store and I am so disappointed! Some of the velcro pieces are sunken into the wooden holes and so they barely "stick" together. The cantelope holds together by just a few strings. One of the velcro pieces on the orange is a piece from the end or side of a roll? It only has velcro on half of the piece, the rest is just material. We're so used to such high quality from Melissa and Doug that it really surprises me! I'll take it back and try again. I hope this isn't a reflection on a decrease in quality from our favorite toy brand.

I use this product for my own children and for my daycare. It is one of their favorite toys. They love to cut the food and stick it back together. This toy is not only a fun toy to play with, but teaches mathematic concepts (fractions). My only complaint is that the velcro is not quite as "sticky" as it could be.

I am always astonished at how many people comment about how they like the M&D wooden food better than the higher end brand because they are bigger! Seriously, if it were for an adult to play with with our full sized pots and pans, then yes, bigger would be better. But seriously are people forgetting that these toys are for children??? The scale here is ridiculous, and if you were to take into consideration the proportion of this food to the size of the child it would be gigantic! It's just like the real genetically engineered foods out there...big in a scary unnatural sort of way! I much prefer the smaller, higher quality toys made by Haba, Plan Toys, and Wonderworld/Educo, and so does my son. 10 years ago when M&D was the only easy to find wooden toys out there I would buy them for a preschool classroom I was running, and they were so much better made than what we have now. There is no doubt that as they have cranked out millions of these toys for a mass market the quality has taken a huge down turn. While I still purchase certain toys from time to time(mostly puzzles), I try to avoid the toys that are going to be heavily used because I know they just don't hold up. As so many others state, the paint on the M&D wooden toys falls off so badly it is really pitiful. We received this set as a Christmas gift and this morning I looked at the lemon and am appalled at how badly it is chipping. I gently touched a loose spot and a flake the size of a dime came off! This is simply ridiculous. I have other toys made by M&D that were given to us at Christmas that are also already broken.
Melissa and Doug offers a huge variety of wooden food items at a great price, but as usual you get what you pay for here.

After 2 months, I can say that there are good things and bad things about this toy. The crate packaging the toy came in is very nice and we kept it for "play store" purposes. The fruit pieces are brightly colored and the paint is nice and shiny. The velcro on the orange, kiwi, lemon, pear, and strawberry pieces works very well, even after 2 months. The velcro pieces inbetween the melon and banana pieces are set too deep into the toy and they don't stick together well (I noticed this right out of the package). My 23 month old daughters like practicing cutting with the large play wooden knife, although they have a smaller, gray plastic knife that they seem to prefer to use (it just seems a bit easier for them to wield). One of my daughters found a piece of stray ice on the floor and put it in a bowl to stir around with a banana piece. The water and wood were not in contact for long (maybe 20 seconds?) but it was long enough to cause the yellow paint on the banana to bubble and flake. I thought the paint would be a little better adhered to the wood but I guess not. Be fair warned!

I purchased this toy for my 22 month old son and he loves it! We count the pieces, name the fruit and learn to share. He's now 28 months and still enjoys this toy very much. I guess it makes him feel big that he's cutting his own fruit :) Fabulous toy!

I love Melissa and Doug toys and I have had a great experience once before with customer service. My 2 year old loves this toy, but right from the start the paint started chipping off the fruit. It bubbles up and then just comes off. My 10 month old puts everything in his mouth and it worries me. I would send it back and I'm sure the company would replace it, but I am doubtful that it would be any different since there's no reason why it happened in the first place. My sister said her kids have the same set and it happened to their fruit too. My kids love the toy so I'm still letting them play with it under supervision. I'm just disappointed that this is not up to the usual quality of Melissa & Doug toys.
