I didn't realize that Melissa and Doug make this car kit in two sizes - one is a nice, pinewood derby type size, this one is much smaller - 1 1/4 inches wide and less than 4 inches long. Both kits comes with similar materials (glue, paint, stickers) but the wow-factor on this one is much less. I had wanted these as the main activity for a 3 year olds b-day party and had to go with something else when this arrived and I saw how small they were.

I should have looked at the size of this toy because I just assumed that it was a good size toy. It is very small and not worth paying full price for. I was lucky to pick this up for 75% off but even at that price I will not buy these types of toys again.

We got a train version of this as a party favor at a birthday party, and I thought what a great idea. We usually give away plastic stuff that I'm sure gets thrown away. This was a great, artistic activity for my son to do. He is 3 1/2 and really took his time painting all the parts. Then when it dried, he enjoyed figuring out how to put the pieces together and adding the stickers. It was a whole afternoon activity. The one thing is it is not a car/train to play with like pushing it around the floor as boys do. It falls apart. It is really just to paint and put together and then look at. It would be amazing if it actually held up well enough to play with, but for this price, just the activity itself was great. I will be giving this away at his next bday party and we will collect more of these for my son and I to do at home together!

I bought 10 of these for my 3 year old's birthday party. Yup....I painted race cars with 3 year olds. It was hysterical and fun, slightly messy but no big deal with a little planning! I did open the boxes ahead of time to glue the wheels on the cars. The kits come with glue but I used some Elmer's Wood glue because I figured it would hold better. Everyone (adults and kids) had a blast painting them at the party and they made cute party favors for the kids. At five bucks a pop, it was totally worth it!

My wife always has these knock-out/dynamite birthday's for the kids, including pirates, race cars, etc and this year for the Grandson, it was a race car them, so we ordered these "Decorate-Your-Own Wooden Race Car" kits for the kids coming over. As everyone knows, about everything from Melissa and Doug is from China, and this is no exception, yet the quality was better then average...the one thing to note is that there is some gluing needed, so the day before the party, we got all the wheels glued on and this worked well. The paints are acyrlic, so they will wash off, but my wife simply had all the kids were some of my old long sleeve sweatshirts, with the backs cut-out and safety pinned together. The kids had a blast; this was one of the first activities and that allowed the paint to dry and then later, they came back to this and applied their decals and stickers. All the children wanted to make sure to take home their cars; as they were custom painted and decaled by each.
