I bought this for my son who is five and has Down syndrome, so I'm not always sure which developmental age is best for him. He likes to name the colors and has figured out how to best attack the balls to get them through the openings. The openings are narrow enough to require a little work, but are not so narrow as to be frustrating. The balls make a clicking sound that seem to be pleasing to a little boy. There isn't anything to contain the balls once they roll out so I usually put it in a shallow container or box lid so that the balls don't all end up under the furniture.

I bought this toy for her 18 month old friend because it seemed right up his alley, I took it out of the box to wrap it and my daughter saw it and went crazy. She would sneak into the room and play with the toy. I finally had to buy her her own. They love this toy. The only problem, I would not recommend having this toy out when having playdates, not just for the wood hammer that one kid could swing at the other but the balls can be thrown at other children too and they are wood......
Buy this toy it is fun and a good height, and for some reason, they love it.

This is the first-ever toy to which my 20-month-old son has taken an instant liking. We just got the tower today, and he's already sat and played with it a long while (30 minutes straight the first time and now 45+ minutes as I'm writing this review). The first time I took it away from him to do other things, he threw a tantrum on me. So, it's a keeper, for sure. Soooo happy I purchased it!!!

Educationally: The toy so far is meeting my expectations. My son is saying "ball" from time to time while playing with the tower, and manipulating the balls through the holes with the mallet helps him work on his fine-motor skills. And, as his ability to identify colors improves, the tower will be a good tool to help him differentiate between the various colors of the balls, mallet, and tower.

In agreement with the con(s) posted by other reviewers: The only problem I have with the tower is the fact that it and the balls and mallet already look beaten up. Because they are all wood, I have no doubt they will stand the test of time with my toddler. But, aesthetically, it literally took just a few minutes for my son to have all of the pieces looking pretty worn out from just normal play (no biting, scratching, etc.). Following my review, I'm going to try to upload some pictures.

My disagreement with some of the other reviews: This toy is designed with children 2-7 years of age in mind. My son is just a few months away from his 2nd birthday. So, I was comfortable buying the tower and letting him play with it right away. But, I've noticed some of the people who gave this toy a bad review posted their comments based on children who were WELL BELOW the age recommendation for this toy. Therefore, I do think those bad reviews are completely unwarranted.

I bought this for my 22 month old grand daughter for Christmas and she loves it. This is one of the old-time kid powered toys that hasn't lost it's charm. She names the colors of each ball as she pounds it down then watches it roll through the maze. She also quickly figured out the balls travel well on a wood floor and giggles as they make they way down the hall and hit the wall. Now that's entertainment!

When I bought this toy, I was unsure if it would be a hit, but to my surprise my 18-month old daughter loved it. It is fun her to place the balls in the openings, use the hammer, and watch the balls go down. The balls make a nice sound too as they roll through the maze. She also likes to play with balls separately - putting them into boxes and baskets, etc since they are a nice weight and size for play, unlike plastic and fabric balls. The finish on the balls is of good quality since the brightly colored finish doesn't rub off when the balls occasionally go banging into my nice white baseboards! The only downside to this toy - since the balls are wood we had to teach my daughter to just roll them, not to throw them since they are heavy! She has been good with that rule, so overall we would recommend this toy.

This is a wonderful toy for hours of fun for both kids and adults alike. When my son got this toy last Christmas at eighteen months old, he sat with his uncle in front of the tree and played for a good half hour straight. What we realized really quickly, though, was that our son also liked using the hammer to hit other things, and people. The hammer quickly became a banned toy and has been stored high out of a reach until a few months ago, when my son, now two, somehow found it. At two, he still can't be trusted with such a weapon, just ask his sister. We had to remove and hide it while he was otherwise distracted so that he can never uncover it again. So definitely know your target when you give this gift.

On a good note, this toy is not useless without the mallet. A good firm slap on the ball sends them tumbling through the tower with a pleasing wood on wood sound, which may be annoying to some, but I find it soothing. The balls are easily lost and can be turned into projectiles if one isn't careful. Also, even with short term mallet use, the balls are dinged up and so is the top of the tower. I can't imagine what they would look like with long term use. There is also a plastic ring around each circle where the balls rest so you can "pound" them, these plastic rings seem to wear out over time. This makes the ball rest deeper in the hole and will probably become useless at holding the ball at all in a few years. I guess time will tell. Also, this is an occasional play toy for my son, it is not one of the toys in constant rotation, so the wear is not from constant use.

Otherwise, it is a very entertaining toy, especially for a younger audience, but just as likely to captivate the adults.
