These jumbo wooden lacing beads in multiple shapes and bright colors and patterns are a bold way to learn and practice lacing, counting, sorting, and more. The 27 approximately 1.5-inch beads include cubes, cylinders, stars, and circles featuring different patterns and numbers, making them a fantastic first beading set-- fun to grasp, and hold, stack and knock down, and to arrange and rearrange. Two thick, extra-long laces are easy for little hands to thread through the large holes in the beads, offering kids three and older hours of entertainment. The beautifully crafted beads and laces store neatly in a sturdy wooden crate.

The quality of the product leaves something to be desired. After playing with the beads on a hardwood floor for one evening, the paint has begun to rub off the edges of the pieces. The holes in the pieces are not sanded finely enough, so sometimes the string gets snagged when one tries to pull it through. Also, and I don't know if that is intentional, or if any other similar product does it differently, but the piece of the rope that is covered in plastic is too short: you have to hold the string about 1 inch away from the plastic covered part to fit it into the bead to be able to grab the string on the other end. An adult can do it of course, but it's hard to do for a 2-yo.
Also, it's worth mentioning that the "box" does NOT come with a lid. It's just a tray, so it has to be stored on a shelf with the puzzles, or dumped into a small bin on her toy organizer. Really, how hard would it have been to add a sliding lid like on other Melissa & Doug sets?
The colors are gorgeous! The paint does wear quickly, especially on hardwood floors (see uploaded pic). The most loved toys are usually the most worn though. It doesn't bother me or my daughter. But you should expect the paint to chip easily.
Even still, I'm really happy with the set. Perfect first lacing set for developing fine motor skills, practicing shapes, colors, and numbers... AND the beads are chunky enough to double as blocks. Great price, too!
1) The paint chipped off these quickly. My son does like to drag his full string of beads, so I would understand some wear and tear, but they look horrible. I want my 1 year old daughter to play with them and I am not comfortable with her using this set.
2) I was originally drawn to the numbers and shapes, but after having them for over a year I think they are too busy and difficult for children to create patterns with.
I have to say my son loves these and has enjoyed playing with them once a week or so. He is quiet and focused when lacing them.
It comes with nice, long, colorful laces but the aglets (yes, I looked up the official name for the hard plastic pieces on the ends of the laces!!)...anyway, the aglets are too short. They are easily 25% shorter than the beads so it is really difficult to string them, even for me. I bought pipecleaners that work much better but they are a standard size so you don't get many beads on them. If I can find extra-long ones it will be better. My point is, the product "as is" just isn't very functional and we were disappointed.
