Let me preface this with how much I like Melissa and Doug products overall. My grandchildren have many M&D toys and this is the first that hasn't been great. It's a cute puzzle, and my grandchildren loved the animals on it, but I've never seen a puzzle where the pieces were so hard to get apart. Within the first 15 minutes of two little girls playing with the puzzle, many of the edges frayed just from trying to get the pieces apart. You might say, "They picked at the paper edges," but no, I was sitting with them and that was not the case. After two days of play, almost all the paper edges were frayed to some degree. This one will soon have to go in the trash. It's not worth my time and effort to return it.

A hint for anyone who buys these wooden puzzles. For reasons I do NOT understand, the puzzle does not have a picture in the wooden tray. I would think that since this is a beginner puzzle it should have a picture. A removable laminated one would be perfect giving the puzzle a longer life so that the picture could be removed upping the level of difficulty, but it does not. So I fixed that. I put the puzzle together and scanned it. Then I printed it out and taped it carefully in the wooden tray. Now my 3 yr old twins can match the pieces to the background. Later as they get better at "snap" puzzles as we call them, I'll remove the picture. Just a tip!

The colors are vivid and bright, the seller shipped quickly, but the puzzle started to wear and chip within the first day of my son getting it. Very disappointed in the quality of the product for the money.

I love Melissa & Doug products, but this puzzle is a letdown. My complaint is with the quality (or lack thereof) of the puzzle pieces.

The puzzle piece edges (where they fit together) are roughly cut. This makes it difficult to get the pieces apart. (You can turn the whole puzzle over and all the pieces stay stuck together.) In trying to wiggle the pieces apart, it is far too easy to flake off a parts of the layers. (Each puzzle piece has layers of wood veneer. Sort of like those flaky biscuits you can buy at the store to bake -- and then you can peel off each individual layer.)

My child (age 2) has only used this puzzle a couple of times (with adult supervision) and the layers are already breaking off. My child has not been rough with the puzzle pieces at all -- I've been watching to make certain of this.

As I said before, I love Melissa & Doug products, but this one gets a "D" for quality.

We bought this puzzle for my 2 1/2 year old and she absolutely loves it. We bring it with us everywhere (restaurants, grandma's house, etc.) and it keeps her busy time and time again. It is a great developemental tool and extremly durable. We were very happy with the value we received for the price we paid. I would definitely recommend this product!

My 2 yr old loves books, puzzles, educational movies, and is extremely perceptive and observant of his surroundings. He put this puzzle together 2-3 times with help, and then he said, "I do it." After that, he was doing it all by himself! Another great Melissa & Doug product!

My kids, ages 3 and 5 love this puzzle. However, i don't think it's that challenging (i.e. it doesn't keep them occupied for too long) but i guess it's the age thing. Highly recommended as a first puzzle.

This is an excellent puzzle for very young children. Melissa & Doug products are well made and kids love them. This puzzle is wooden so kids wont destroy it if they try to roughly put the pieces in. This is a very cute design.

My daughter is two years old and loves to put together puzzles. With her older brother's puzzles, she gets a little frustrated. This was the perfect puzzle for her. It has twelve pieces, which is just enough to pose a little challenge while still allowing her to feel independent and proud when she finishes. The pieces are large enough that she can focus on the colors and patterns to figure out where the pieces go.
The colors are very bright and vibrant, and the scene is cute - the typical gathering of farm animals with a big red barn in the background. I like that the puzzle comes with a wooden holder of sorts instead of a cardboard box, both for stability while my daughter is putting it together and for storage later. I've had issues with previous M&D puzzles with the wood flaking off and potential splinters, but this one is smooth and even, no trouble.
This is a great starter puzzle, and we'll be looking for others in this series.

Ordered this puzzle, expecting a cardboard puzzle in a wooden frame. What a surprise when the puzzle arrived and the entire puzzle was wooden. When our children were young, we bought the standard cardboard puzzle with cardboard frame and so that's what we were expecting. The materials seem suited to wear, and we are expecting our grand children will love them. Though the price is more than you would expect to pay for a childs puzzle, the quality makes up for it ten fold.
