5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Puzzles for a Boy!
I bought this as a whim for my 3-year old. It's spectacular. It's four separate puzzles in one box and each puzzle has a shape on the backside to help him determine how to first sort the four puzzles before putting them together. Not only has he learned to put together the pieces, but's it's also been a great teacher of what a diamond, circle, triangle and square look...

1.0 out of 5 stars Be careful! This is actually 4 separate 12-piece puzzles, NOT a single 48 piece puzzle
This is really only appropriate for very young children. 5+ wouldn't enjoy it. The name on the box is misleading-- it's not one puzzle- it's 4. I could have picked that up if I had read the description more closely, but who thought getting a kids puzzle should require such diligence?

Not only has he learned to put together the pieces, but's it's also been a great teacher of what a diamond, circle, triangle and square look like. He's gotten it down so well, that daily he gets out the box and now completes all four puzzles himself! He loves the fact that they are a boat, train, tractor and airplane ! Perfect for a little guy!

I gave this puzzle (which is actually 4 separate puzzles) to my son for his 3rd birthday. He immediately spent the next hour playing with it and wasn't even interested in opening anything else. The pieces are very sturdy and easy for him to stick together. The back of the pieces are coded with shapes so that kids can sort them into the 4 separate puzzles. The pieces are large and the colors are vibrant.

I basically agree with the other reviewers. This is great for young children, and a perfect first jigsaw puzzle. Our son was 27 months when I took it out, and now at 28 months he also does 48 piece puzzles- with some guidance, though he still loves these. It has been great for teaching sorting and shapes. Each vehicle has a different shape on the back (circle, square, triangle, diamond)- which is a great way to help sort the 4 puzzles. Now at 28 months we've moved on to the 48 piece puzzles (this is 4- 12 piece puzzles). The pieces are thick and durable. I am so happy I bought this!!

I bought these puzzles for my 2-1/2 year old son. He had, and loved, the Melissa and Doug Giant Fire Engine puzzle. That puzzle is very good quality and great for his level, so I was hoping that these would be too. These puzzles are of very good quality as well, however, some of the pieces may not "stick" together unless put together in the correct sequence. For example, two pieces may form the ear that fits into another piece. If those two pieces are not assembled first, the puzzle will not stay together. My little guy found this frustrating as he expects the pieces to form a nice tight fit. Other than this comment, these are very good puzzles.

Melissa & Doug make incredible floor puzzles! This is actually four different puzzles (12 pieces each). I purchased this as a gift for a two and a half year old and we had great fun together. He was so young that I had to put it together for him the first time so he could see it. After he had a visual example he wes able to put it together by himself.

We really love these puzzles. Our son is 28 months and is absolutely obsessed with all types of transportation-themed toys. We are thrilled he is able to do these simpler Melissa & Doug puzzles without help already. The only complaint I really have is that some pieces have strange cuts so they don't hook together and stay hooked (without other pieces added around them). This means that they can shift apart from each other making our son think he has a mismatch. Not a big deal, but causes a little confusion.

If you like this set, you will also like:

Also a plus, all of these sets have shapes printed on the back of each piece so you can sort out the four separate puzzles quickly.

These puzzles have nice, large, colorful pieces and my son doesn't mind that all 4 puzzles are mixed together in the box. He enjoys separating them out based on the shapes on the back of the puzzle pieces. My only qualm about these is that not all the pieces actually snap together. Some just lay next to one another until the pieces on top of them get snapped in. So we have to keep pushing the pieces back together or else I have to hold them in place while he finds the other pieces to go on top. For example, none of the pieces in the whole bottom row of the train puzzle actually snaps together. I'm not sure why they were designed this way. It could be very frustrating for a kid to keep knocking these pieces out of alignment. The rest of the pieces fit together just like a regular jigsaw puzzle. I don't have any other Melissa and Doug puzzles so I don't know if this is normal for them.

These are great puzzles and my son loves them, but the packaging is terrible. The pieces for each puzzle come in a non-reusable plastic bag, with all 4 bags tossed in the box. That means that every time he wants to do one of the puzzles, he has to sort out the pieces first. They did think to put a pattern on the back, but just putting a divider in the box would have sufficed. Supply 4 of your own ziplock bags and it's a great toy.
