5.0 out of 5 stars Cost $4.99 at toys-r-us store.
I bought this yesterday from a toys r us store for $4.99 plus tax. $19.99 is a total rip off for this. My son does love it and it is a great toy to buy for your child but this price is not justified unless you live on a mountain top and have it delivered to your door. All the wooden puzzles by Melissa and Doug are $4.99 at toys r us and target. So either both stores in my...

3.0 out of 5 stars needs a little work
This puzzle would have been a lot better if the puzzle maker had thought like a child instead of an adult. My son is quite content to put the oval piece into the rectangular cutout, and it fits without any difficulty, although this is clearly not what the designer had in mind--nor does it help my son learn to match shapes, merely sizes. The same is true for several of...

I recently purchased this puzzle for my seventeen month old son. I didn't think he would be ready to play with puzzles, but I was wrong! This puzzle has huge pieces with very large knobs, making it very easy for small hands to grasp. He will sit and remove all the pieces, and then slowly move each one around the board until he finds the correct home for it! The pieces can be removed and placed back in their correct spaces very easily, they don't have to be forced back in place or pulled out with any force. I would recommend this puzzle for any child, age toddler and up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very durable and educational, October 4, 2001

This is a wonderful puzzle that is both fun and educational. The puzzle is made of thick, quality plywood and very durable. It has taken quite a bit of abuse from my 19 mo. old daughter. She tries to carry it from room to room and like most toddlers, thinks that if she presses the peices in each slot hard enough, it will eventually fit, hehe. Despite this abuse it has held up nicely. The colors have not faded and the puzzles pieces are big and easy for small hands to handle. The large knobs on each piece are especially nice for small hands. There are also pictures of similarly shaped objects beneath each shape to help reinforce it. Overall, a great toy that I think will withstand most any childs daily play.

I bought this for my 13 month old son. He is a premmie and is behind in his congitive and motor skills. He abosultely adores it. The large nobs are very easy for small hands to grasp. This is a very thick puzzle thicker then most wood puzzles I've seen. The large thick shapes make it easy for yound children to slide the pieces into places. Within 2 days of getting this he could put one of the pieces back in. And now a month later he can do them all and match the shapes up. It is wonderful we are so pleased with this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puzzles are FUN! And this is a quality puzzle!, November 5, 2001

I look for toys that are fun, fairly quiet, and easy to play. I look for toys that will foster independance and exploration of the world, if it is educational then so much the better. I want sturdy toys that will put up with a lot of play. This puzzle fits all of those lists.

Here is the thing- puzzles develop eye and hand coordination which is good for pre reading skills. This one makes it easy for little clumsy fingers to hold the pieces and place them where they go.

Puzzles are good for teaching problem solving skills; if it doesn't fit here, will it fit there or if I turn it this way?

Even after you think your child has mastered it, you child will continue to play with the puzzle. To make it harder, you might encourage your child to dump out three or four puzzles at the same time and complete them all.

Puzzles are a lot of fun. This one is a great introduction for little children to the joy of puzzles and problem solving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific play value, August 16, 2001

I love wooden puzzles because they are relatively inexpensive (compared with most toys) and because I feel like my children are learning while they're playing. I have three children -- and many puzzles -- and this is one of the best. I bought it for my youngest (now 32 mos) for her second birthday and it's a huge hit. The puzzle pieces are very thick and durable, and the large wooden knobs are the perfect size for tiny hands (and there's absolutely no chance they'll come off). The colorful pictures under each shape really keep my daughter's interest, especially when she was younger and loved to play peek-a-boo using the pieces and the pictures. Now, she loves identifying each picture so it's great a great vocabulary building tool too.

In short, don't hesitate to buy this toy. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for learning colors and shapes!, July 21, 2005

This review is from: Large Shapes Jumbo Knobs (Toy)
We got this puzzle for our daughter when she was about 15 months old. I was actually looking for the smaller version of it (three pieces), but since I couldn't find that one, I purchased this one, and I'm so glad I did! This one has proven to be fun for her over and over again, and she has learned several colors and shapes from doing this puzzle repeatedly. Now she's almost two, and she loves finding ovals, circles, squares and triangles everywhere she looks. I attribute her knowledge of her shapes and colors to having worked this puzzle so many times. Many rainy afternoons have been spent talking through this puzzle. Great holiday gift. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars 18 Month Old Uses Daily, January 17, 2005
This review is from: Large Shapes Jumbo Knobs (Toy)
Sure he may have the Chicken Dance Elmo, a brand new slide, etc. but the toy he uses every day is this one. He will grab me by the finger and pull me upstairs and into the playroom, sit down next to the puzzle and pick up each piece, wait for me to say what it is and then put the piece back, moving on to the next until all of them are done, then he will do it over again.

He will now remove the triangle when I ask where the pizza is as well as remove the octagon when I ask him where the stop sign is at. The others are hit and miss and probably more luck than anything else. I am afraid though that I may have taught my son that a triangle is a pizza and that an octagon is a stop sign. Yikes. Hopefully it isn't too late to switch from telling him what is underneath the shape to what the shape actually is. . .

Great toy and educational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great puzzle for little hands!, January 5, 2003

I purchased this puzzle when my son was about 18 months old. He took to it quite well and still enjoys playing with it at 2! At first, he worked on his fine motor skills by putting the pieces in their appropriate spot. Now, he's working on verbal skills by not only saying the shapes, but also identifying the shapes underneath. One important thing I noticed was that the shapes go in quite easily and the shapes with multiple sides (octogon, pentagon, triangle) fit no matter which way they put it in - I liked this because my son had greater chances for success. Overall great quality, durable - will definitely last through the years!
