5.0 out of 5 stars a great little instrument
When my toddler started chewing the paint off a metal kazoo I knew we needed an alternative. Like all other Melissa & Doug toys we've tried, their kazoo seems both well-conceived and durably constructed. 2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't sound like a kazoo
I was excited to purchase a wood kazoo, thinking it would better for my 1 1/2 because it wasn't plastic. But it just doesn't sound good.

When my toddler started chewing the paint off a metal kazoo I knew we needed an alternative. Like all other Melissa & Doug toys we've tried, their kazoo seems both well-conceived and durably constructed. It is fabricated from two pieces of wood the length of the instrument solidly glued together with a hole bored for the membrane to vibrate. The soft wood does accumulate teeth marks from my little chewer. However, since the wood is unfinished I am not concerned about him ingesting anything other than cellulose.

It is quieter than a standard metal kazoo. In the hands of a little musician, that can be a good thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Kazoo, January 29, 2009

I have a collection of Kazoos and "onion" or "eunuch" flutes made from many materials, MANY of them wood. I purchased several of these to engage children at Renaissance Faire in the fine art of making music. They are very inexpensive so I could give one to each child to keep.

The trick with a kazoo is to use it properly. you need to hum and blow lightly into the mouthpiece, and NOT just blow. In fact, I teach kids to put their lips to the instrument and try to talk without removing their lips. This works amazingly, and induces much giggling!

As for the sterilization issue, I just wipe off my wood kazoos with lemon juice, just like I do my wooden cutting boards!

I was looking for a small, not expensive and fun stocking stuffer for Christmas because I remember how much fun these were when I was a kid. We played with them so much our parents said "go outside"! My grandkids don't get to enjoy the simple fun things we did as kids who could go play all day without tha kind of supervision we need today. Fun, easy, durable and a beginning to the music we can make ourselves! I'll get more for Birthdays, and other "non-special" occasions for other family and friends who have kids.

Bought this for my three year old who loves it, have to stop him from poking the vibrating piece though. The blue holes are not drilled out they are just for looks. The wood seems to be holding up, told him not to bite it and it hasn't been an issue, smells like Popsicle sticks or tongue depressors. Like other reviewers noted the sound is not that of a regular metal or plastic kazoo it is actually a lot less annoying ;)

The kazoo is high quality but my 4 year old daughter can not play it and either can I. My husband is the only one that can get it to make any noise. I had expected it to be much easier to play since it is rated for 3 and up.

My 3 year old doesn't quite understand how to use this kazoo. It's very durable and fun once he gets the hang of it! I would recommend it for a small toy with no real educational value.

We got one of these when our son was 8 months old. He quickly figured out how to make it make music. A tip: you hum, don't blow--older kids might overthink it, but not an infant. And since then he has just loved it. Sure, it can get annoying to hear a repetitive honking noise but the sheer glee this can give an older infant or toddler makes it worth it.

I was dissapointed this was mass produced in China, but that was my fault for not looking into it further. We got a good laugh out of it(for my sisters's 57th birthday) because it replaced a metal one we all used as teenagers.I really thought I was supporting an American couple.Oh well.It made her laugh and that's all that REALLY counts.

1.0 out of 5 stars WORST. KAZOO. EVER., August 7, 2011

Kazoos should be easy to play. Effortless and fun. NOT with this one. It takes some serious skill to make it even remotely sound like a real kazoo. Dont buy this unless you enjoy being disapointed.
