I bought this puzzle for my 2 year old. She loves the Melissa & Doug alphabet puzzle, and it really helped her learn letters and how to do a puzzle. So, I wanted to build on that and help her with her numbers. The big disappointment with this puzzle is that there are multiple places where a number can fit. (ie, she can put the #16 in the #19 spot). So, it doesn't really help with the "puzzle skills". And since some of the pieces fit anywhere, she's not really motivated to try to find where the piece really goes.

Although Amazon shipped this much quicker than I expected, it is not what was pictured nor what Melissa & Doug used to sale. I have a number of Melissa & Doug puzzles that are painted on ALL sides. The older puzzles are made of real wood and feel much nicer than this pressed board crap. They are also cut to the image where the newer puzzles are mere outlines, haphazardly thrown together. I would have promptly returned this puzzle, but my 19 month old son really loves puzzles and saw this and the other 2 puzzles as they were coming out of the box. I cannot believe that these cost the same amount or more than the other puzzles we own, yet they are of such an inferior quality that I cannot believe the are trying to pawn it off as the same thing they used to sale. Shame on you Melissa & Doug.

We had previously bought the alphabet version of this puzzle, and both this number puzzle and the alphabet puzzle came and the pieces were not painted all the way around, as pictured. Instead, they were just the plain wood on the sides and back. Just FYI.

[...]. This is terrible Melissa & Doug quality! Advertised as painted wood; it came as half press board and half wood with some cheap paper glued to the top over another color version of paper! (I know this because I had to re-glue 5 of the pieces numbers down) This is not good quality but my daughter still loves it and plays with it daily. I found the full painted wood version of the chunky ABC puzzle at a local store (I didn't previously know carried M&D products) and bought it for a few dollars more than here on amazon. Would gladly have done the same for the numbers puzzle and may have to if this one doesn't last...

I'm very pleased with this puzzle. I think it's great that each piece has the corresponding number of little critters surrounding it...a really good way to reinforce counting. The pieces do get beat up after a while, especially if dropped on a hard floor or banged together, but they are wood and not plastic, so it's to be expected.

We bought this for our kindergartner who was just not remembering how to count her "teen" numbers. She and our preschooler spent hours with it- we counted the numbers, guessed what number it was, picked our favorite colors... It is bright and cheerful and gives them a big, tangible number to hold and play with. Even our "that puzzles is for babies" 7 year old found herself drawn into it and we made up a game for her to add and subtract numbers with it.

My 2.5 year old is getting really into numbers, so I thought she would love this puzzle, however, when it arrived and she proudly proclaimed she had finished it I looked over and discovered that while all of the numbers were completely inside the holes, they were not all in the appropriate spot. It is too bad that so many of them can fit into the spots that are not correct. She does enjoy it, but the usefulness of this puzzle is greatly diminished by the fact that the shapes can be placed in the wrong order.

We have a lot of Melissa & Doug puzzles, but my son loves this one the best. The quality is good, and the colors are very stimulating for a young curious mind. Highly recommended for any toddler over 16 months.

this puzzle was originally meant as a birthday gift. however when it unexpectedly arrived yesterday, i had to give it to him, "NUMBERS!" "NEW PUZZLE!" he ran around barely able to hold it--it is big and a bit heavy for a 23 month old. the colors are amazing. the block letters are the perfect size and stand on their own. you can stack them. line them up. combine them to make larger numbers. my only gripe is the "6" and "9" are exactly the same but at last it doesn't bother him like the sound puzzle because they are a different color. in addition, i altered the sound puzzle with a red stripe around the raw wood edge--"red stripe nine"--and ironically the chunky number "9" is painted with a red (stripe) border. he still plays with the sound puzzle but now HE is the voice articulating the numbers.

Everyone should have this puzzle!!!

...because it is bright and colorful, very tolerable to chewing and sucking, and well, for whatever reasons that are unbeknownst to me he loves it for them too. Melissa & Doug toys are some of the best toys for young children out there. It is also a great toy because it is introducing numbers at the earliest ages possible. That as well as problem solving. It's all about numbers and mathematics. Do yourself a favor and help your child as many ways as possible to learn math and sciences. Thanks M&D for this great toy.
