Being a Melissa and Doug product, we were excited to purchase this product for a toddler. It's neat that the paint squares are on the top of each page, so that your child can get fresh and not "muddied" paint with each new picture. However, it is very difficult to get just enough water to moisten the colors. And the included paint brush is very fine and doesn't absorb much paint. The pictures are cute, but because the water colors aren't toddler friendly, it makes this an expensive paint book. This is all very disappointing.

Instead of tossing the book, we decided to use Crayola preloaded washable paint brush pens (see product description below) we had already purchased for about $6, and they work very well.

I'm giving this 4 stars only b/c my 3 1/3 year old daughter now loves it. When we first got it, she was frustrated w/ getting the right amount of water to mix w/ the "paints" that are located at the top of the page. very frustrated she said, "This ISN'T working!" now she loves it and asks to paint at least 1 per day. she loves the sheet that shows every picture in the book. She'll spend a good 5 minutes looking that over to decide which one she wants to work on. It's nothing spectacular, and may cause some frustration at first, but for the price, I'm definitely ordering another one to put in her Christmas "art box" from santa.

We love this set!
The pictures are large and fun and easy for my 3 year old to paint in the lines. These have provided hours of entertainment! Plus, I think that they have really helped her with her painting coordination, and increased her confidence since she can actually stay in the lines. (Because like I said the pictures are large)
The paint on the top of the sheet isn't the best and rips when wet, so we use our box of watercolors...
I would def buy this again!
Worth the money!!

We got this for our 3+ year old daughter as a less-messier way for her to paint. For a Melissa & Doug product, I had higher expectations. The pictures are cute and she really likes to choose which picture she gets to paint. However the paints at the top of the page are hard to get on the brush and she ends up wearing holes in the paint before the page is finished. We'll still use the printed pages, but she'll use her regular water colors with them rather than the paint at the top of the page.

Granted, my son is only 2, so his expectations aren't very high and our paintings aren't the neatest, BUT I think its a great exercise for him and he really enjoys it. He is a very active 2 year old who seldom sits through a book, tv show, or anything for that matter, so I was pleasantly surprised at how entertained he was by this item. We use it at home and have traveled with it as well. Its a great all in one activity for plane rides :)

I let my almost two-year old paint with this with direct supervision, even though it says it is rated for age three years and up. I expect a toddler to be messy. That is not what I mean when I say the product is messy. What I mean is that the paint is applied on little pads at the top of each sheet. They are somewhat like a Mary Kay make-up sample that you see at a party. They are difficult to work with, even for me. You effectively have to scrub with your wet paint brush to pick up enough color to be able to paint a few strokes, then return to the pad, scrub to pick up more paint, and apply it again. It will take a toll on the paper if they child has to do this a few times in the same spot. The paper is not made to take much water, which is strange considering that the paint is water-activated.

There is not much paint to use on each page, but perhaps that is a good thing because this WILL stain your child's clothes and ruin them. My daughter got two little dabs of this on her Baby Gap jeans. I took them off and applied Zout immediately. (It has gotten out any number of stains for me, including blood that went everywhere--crib sheet, crib sheet protector, little one's shirt and bottoms, and both crib rail covers when she split her lip on her crib rail while jumping like a fiend.) Guess what? The stain is set. I would never buy this for any toddler or child, unless your child is going to be covered in a full-body smock that you don't care about having stains on, or your child is a perfectly neat little person who never has any accidental spills or mistakes. I'm also concerned about what this would do to carpet and other textiles. Ugh. I cannot recommend it at all, and I regret spending money on it. I will never buy another one of these again. I am off to find the water-activated Crayola painting pages and investigate to see if there is another option from some other company that I am missing.

I was very surprised to see so many negative reviews about this product. True, it isn't perfect in its' design, but for the price and quantity of pictures kids are able to create, it is definitely a good value. My daughter is three and has had no issues with painting the pictures. Yes, it did take her a couple of times before she got used to having to add quite a bit of water to get the color started, but this is also the way regular watercolor paints work. In addition, other water color paint books run out of their paint quickly, run/mix together and create much more of a mess. My daughter will spend hours painting these pictures - she loves them. I frequently buy these as birthday gifts for kids her same age and have only heard good things.
